Meritocracy has never actually meant anything. The word itself is a tautology. In every context in which it is used, the implication is "you are not allowed to question how these decisions are made". It is a weasel word for autocracy

Just look at these paragraphs from the AP story. Hegseth called Brown unqualified solely because he's Black. Then they fired him... and replaced him with a white guy so indisputably unqualified that he requires a Presidential waiver. This is what "merit" means to them. apnews.com/article/trum...

I understand that it's good cope but it was pretty clear that "the bad guys are dummies" is a stupid message to emphasize by like 2002. Understand that our enemies are full of folly, but so is everyone and our objection should not be that they are fools, but that they are malicious and doing harm
