Many congratulations to my PhD student Kris Swank, who just passed her VIVA with minor corrections! The thesis was co-supervised with @gparsons.bsky.social and both Geraldine and I look forward to the book to come! 😊 @uofgfantasy.bsky.social @uofgartshums.bsky.social

I just reported via the The Woodland Trust the first sign of spring in our garden: the first frogspawn spotted in our tiny pond! You can record yours here: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woo...

Wild geese just as they’re preparing to land on the field opposite us. Worth having the sound on to get a sense of the commotion they’re capable of! I love watching them!

Join us for this FREE online event, a collab. between @uofgfantasy.bsky.social + the Centre for Fantasy Literature Studies, Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: “Fantasy in the Midst of War: Perspectives from Ukraine” www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fantasy-in...

Really excited for this symposium in April! I'll be sharing some juicy archival tidbits about the editorial process for Ursula K. Le Guin's novel POWERS, & what it can tell us about YA publishing trends in the 2000s. Thrilled to be on a panel with Marita Arvaniti & @amandalandegren.bsky.social!

Thrilled to be presenting at this symposium alongside the fabulous @taylorwdriggers.bsky.social among others! My talk, you may be unsurprised to learn, draws from my PhD research on The Lord of the Rings fan to reflect on how the stories we read and reread when young shape our lifelong identities.

We are excited it’s February because it means our collaboration with the Centre for Fantasy Literature Studies, Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is finally here! 1/4

My book "Illustrating The Lord of the Rings in the Soviet Bloc" has a cover! Featuring artwork by the most excellent Yassen Panov, illustrator of the 1990-1991 Bulgarian #LOTR translation Vlastelinat Na Prastenite. The book is currently scheduled for release on September 18th #Tolkien

Excellent Burns Night dinner at Corpus Cristi! #BurnsNight

One of the most poignant sonnets ever. RIP Michael Longley

PLEASE read this really important message about The Folklore Library and Archive and if you can help follow this link www.gofundme.com/f/keep-the-f... Even if you can't help directly, please forward this message on to everyone you can. These archives are valuable. Thank you.

Excellent news! I’ve got a chapter in this volume on #Tolkien, folklore, and foxes! 🦊 🦊 🦊 The keynote lecture on which my chapter is based, can be accessed here: youtu.be/rAAYOnkVnwk (Apologies in advance for the ear worm!) @uofgfantasy.bsky.social @uofgartshums.bsky.social

A.A. Milne was born #OTD in 1882. It’s lovely to see all the Winnie-the-Pooh posts, but I’d like to share instead one of my favourite children’s poems, in Milne’s characteristically brilliant versification and rhyming style, yet also with some of his more disturbing aspects… Enjoy!

I have a near-12yo shouting “I won, I won!” and dancing round the house because his panel was selected for the @the-phoenix-comic.bsky.social! Here’s the original and the Squid Bits strip with his drawing as the last panel!!! So very proud of him! ✍️ 🎨

I’ll be opening the Hilary Term Corpus Cristi #Tolkien seminar series at Oxford next week, with a paper titled “Tolkien the Mythographer” - details in this link: tolkien50.web.ox.ac.uk/event/tolkie... Do come + say hello if around! @uofgfantasy.bsky.social @tolkiensociety.org @tolkienguide.com

After receiving the umpteenth message about this, I thought I’d share it - apparently I’m cited at around 15 minute in. Haven’t listened to it yet, and not sure whether I should be proud or miffed? You tell me! www.npr.org/2025/01/11/g...

The wild geese flying in formation above our garden earlier on today. Is there anyone else who immediately thinks of Nils Holgersson when seeing them? 🪿 #childrensliterature

Great spotted woodpecker in our garden (with a bonus blue tit in the corner!) #birds #birdwatching #birdphotography

I’m quoted in this #BBC News article on fantasy, Welsh legend, and the Welsh language: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Some of my points here are explored in much more detail in my book and in my essay in the @britishlibrary.bsky.social fantasy collection (more info in below) 1/3

Some of the books and journal volumes on #Tolkien I’ve authored/edited/contributed to. Without him (most of) my academic career wouldn’t exist! Thank you Professor #Tolkien! #TolkienBirthdayToast @tolkiensociety.org @uofgfantasy.bsky.social

From an Edwardian children’s magazine (if anyone knows who B.G. was, let me know!): “The Old Year and the New” “But she would not be discouraged” - a good motto for 2025? #HappyNewYear #Hogmanay2024

Christmas LEGO shenanigans! (My almost 12yo did most of it - I was the official “piece finder”, and got it wrong multiple times too, according to him!) #Christmas  #LEGO 🎄🎅

Ta-da! @andyd99.bsky.social has just finished the royal icing and iced the Christmas cake! #Christmas  #baking 🎄🎅
