25% tariffs on Mexico & Canada, + the 10% tariffs that are already in effect on China, could cost the typical American household more than $1,200 per year. #PIIECharts Learn more: www.piie.com/research/pii...

It's a pleasure to speak this afternoon at the Swiss Development Cooperation's annual IC Forum, on a panel about "Africa, a Future Market". Through I think the title is not really correct. It's rather "Africa, a Present Growth Market". Since 1990, GDP of Sub-Saharan Africa has grown 4-fold!

We can provide more energy services (which is what we ultimately care about) while using far less energy in the first place. You can do this through decarbonisation and electrification (which comes with huge efficiency gains).

Dean Karlan's job at USAID was LITERALLY to improve the efficiency of its programs. DOGE is clearly not actually after cutting fraud and waste. And its actions will clearly make the US weaker while also making the world a worse place. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

I think the UK aid cuts are sad and shortsighted. But admit I'm also confused by spending more on defense. Surely the last few decades of military misadventure by large powers has demonstrated the weak link between (even) massively outspending an opponent and winning a war against them.

Economist @betseystevenson.bsky.social, on DOGE: "I would basically call it a performance art piece... probably making the government more inefficient, but there's a lot of spectacle about it," designed "to dazzle us and have us look away from trillions of dollar in tax cuts to the uber-wealthy."

This week, Maoz Inon and I met with Palestinian and Israeli communities in private meetings & public events. While social media is filled with propaganda, we encountered many empathetic, engaged people seeking change. We discussed a future of equality, justice, & lasting peace.

Weather forecasts have become much more accurate. A four-day forecast today is as accurate as a one-day forecast 30 years ago.

Such a travesty that the Demographic and Health Survey program was terminated this week. I realize the Gates Foundation can't pick up all the pieces, but this one seems like a natural one for them to pick up given that the DHS is the go-to data source for many of their focus areas.

On its face, this would seem intended to chill law firms from challenging the Trump administration in court One more step taken to knock the pegs out of any ability to push back

The new practice that economics journals require sharing of data is already bearing fruit. This practice represents an important improvement for the profession.

There's no debate. This appalling rhetoric is antisemitic, plain and simple. It is incumbent on everyone – left, right and center – to call out this blatant hatred.

Right-wing populist parties claim to be the voice of the "kleiner Mann", yet their policies overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest families. This isn’t new—but the extent still surprises me. @zeit.de lays this out nicely, & the clearest explanation I’ve seen is Desmond’s "Poverty, by America" polisky
