If they had started this whole process with this and brought in experts to audit the various agencies this would have gone differently. "Move fast and break things" is and always has been a terrible plan. It's the kind of thing a teenager thinks up and assumes nobody's every thought of it before.

So the President not only fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He also fired the top JAGs at the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are the lead people who determine what is a legal order and what is not. So if you're planning to do things that are illegal they're the most obvious obstacle.
