"digital asbestos" is fantastic framing.

if you're in Europe PLEASE consider signing the Stop Destroying Games initiative. the deadline is July 31st 2025. it aims to create legislation for publishers to stop killing the games you pay for and to provide an end-of-life plan for live-service products. thanks! eci.ec.europa.eu/045/public/#...

Literally begging you to post about Just Some Stuff. We will see the news I absolutely promise. Twenty people will repost the same exact thing about the news. Only you can post about a turtle you saw

This article is going to turn me into the Joker. Literary style is not a puzzle you solve to get a little information treat 😩😩😩

People who don’t like AI aren’t in denial about how useful it is. People who like AI are in denial about how useful it is

If a colleague had the reliability rate of an LLM, they would be fired. If ordinary* software did, it would be uninstalled. LLMs require the chat format, because chat makes us party to the conversation. We insert the meaning ourselves - and hold it to a different standard. It's the mirror effect.

Checks out: www.jonoalderson.com/conjecture/j...

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future. But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

RE: Code Cylinders Ultimately, given that Star Wars was a bunch of Samurai Movies in space, it seems fitting that the Empire's entire security state revolves around the digital equivalent of an Inkan.

'Developers working with OpenAI chatbot technology recently shared examples of “systemic deception behaviour masked as helpfulness” and a tendency to “say whatever it needs to to appear competent” as a result of chatbots being programmed to reduce “user friction”.'

Don't lie, the Doctor cocked up didnt he

My partner & I were trying to ID a bird we heard while walking and the guy who had stopped his car to let us pass got out and was like "it's a frog, actually. Cope's Gray. I do frog surveys... Sorry" And then got in his car without a word and drove off. Absolute king

I don't know if anyone has written about this, but the thing where Google's engineers have designed this software program to spit out text that simulates contrition, grovelling apology feels like something close to admission that they've designed a program they KNOW is fraudulent +are covering it up

Bad brainwaves: ChatGPT makes you stupid pivot-to-ai.com/2025/06/16/b... - text www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-a9... - video

so i spent the weekend fucking around with the latest chatgpt build working through its text analysis/synthesis capabilities and hoooooooo boy i have a bunch of complicated thoughts.

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

It’s hard to escape the dawning realization that part of the goal of Google’s AI Overview is to simply eradicate the concept of anyone else having any kind of website at all. Why click on a link & explore when Google told you the answer & you didn’t know it was wrong?

My 11yo telling us about literary sessions in class (year 6) where the passage they have to read makes no sense because the name of the subject changes halfway through. At the end of the passage it says "Generated by OpenAI". This is simply unacceptable behaviour by teachers. Absolutely fucked.

made a little collection of classic Mac related stickers! if you donate anything to the ACMS, I’ll send you a set - just DM me a screenshot of the donation and your postal address, I can post overseas too! 😄 acms.org.au/help-us/

This is incredible

This is a classic of AI: transfer the routine part to a computer, make the human watch for errors and hold them liable. Like the self-driving car which transfers control to a human miliseconds before a crash

This is Waylon. He'd been in a shelter for 95 days when a woman came in with her son Cai. Cai asked so many great questions about how to keep him safe and healthy. When he returned to officially adopt Waylon, he arrived in a very dapper suit, saying it was a "special occasion." 14/10 for everybody

hello i am drunk and wondering, what if i do the 40 cloves of garlic chicken but with 40 bulbs of garlic

This is like an artwork exploring the meaning of a gate.

We found that AI tools - both general like #ChatGPT and research-specific like #Elicit - lack the reliability, relevancy and accuracy to summarise research for teachers. This is important because we have been sold the idea that AI will make research more accessible.

it's like the flintstones where wilma opens the cabinet under the kitchen cabinet revealing that the garbage disposal is a dinosaur bird and the dinosaur bird goes "SQWAK~ it's a living 🤷🏻‍♂️"

Remember the personal computer with DOS from 1981? Notice the icons that now appear on your screen, saving you from typing out commands? A personal computer pioneer Bill Atkinson has died. #Gift RIP www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/t...

Well this couldn’t have come at a better time www.bbc.com/news/article...

The speed of writing code has never, and will never be the bottleneck. The bottleneck, the limiting factor, is always in the thinking about the code and how it works, understanding it. People who use chatgpt to write code are literally removing the only part of programming that is actually useful.

The Superb FairyWren really lives up to its name

If the CEO of a soda company declared that soda-making technology is getting so good it’s going to ruin the global economy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that person is either lying or fully detached from reality... www.cnn.com/2025/05/30/b...

"John Constintin" Another comic book mashup from this day in 2016.

I have been logged out of my toothbrush.

Great thread for the rocket heads.

[taps the sign]

When learning something, one of the most important resources is a person who will tell you "no, you are wrong, you are not making sense, what you are saying is meaningless," to keep you from going further and further wrong without knowing it. Chatgpt tells you what you want to hear.

Every tech oligarch wants to build an Everything App - because they now have the power to do so, but also because they're completely out of ideas. This week's issue tackles the rise of the "data-driven" Nothing Manager responsible for building Everything. productpicnic.beehiiv.com/p/the-everyt...

"I reported you and I need you to do this thing so I can undo the report/the site wants me to share this thing about the report" is ALWAYS a scam. Always. There is absolutely no scenario where it's legitimate.
