One of my 4th graders was reading "hotel" today and said "hot-el". I asked her to go back and try again, flexing the vowel (changing it from a short sound to a long sound). She then sounded it it as "ho-tel" and said, "Oh, hotel! Like hotel, motel, holiday inn!" I died laughing.
