There are precedents for the US President's plan to annex the territories currently known as Canada, and indeed they include parts of what is currently Canada. The Proclamation of British Columbia is (mis)remembered as a benevolent act.

While a lot about this current political moment is genuinely shocking, America is exactly what my Black Southern family has always said it was. It’s not exactly a comfort, but it is grounding.

Check out my latest "Learning from Movements" interview! Florence Stratton has been involved in social justice struggles in Regina, Saskatchewan, since the 1960s. She speaks with me about learning about racism and colonialism, fighting homelessness, and never giving up. mediacoop.ca/node/119281

NEW: Find IDF Soldiers, my journalism database containing profiles of 85 Canadians that fought in the Israeli military, is back up after an attempt to shut it down! Please share it as widely as possible to ensure those who missed it can see it now. findidfsoldiers.net

The U.S. arms industry already fuels two-thirds of the world’s conflicts. Now, The U.S. is letting weapons companies bribe their way into even more deals. Corruption isn’t a side effect—it’s the business model.

My latest: "The more often we have experienced true helplessness, the more likely we are to feel powerless in situations where action is possible. And the more we freeze or flail in response to threats, the more deeply ingrained those responses become."

While mourning the end of #USAID many are simultaneously calling for a rise in alternatives to #foreignaid and autonomy of #globalsouth countries. Read my new consultative study with #community leaders in the south on how this could be possible. globalfundcommunityfoundations.org/news/reimagi...

If you’re reading this on a phone, congrats! There’s a good chance some of its minerals were mined by exploited Congolese workers under armed group control. Tech companies know it, governments allow it, and we keep upgrading. Take action now!

The Patriotic Divide: while 90% of Canadians may still believe that we're a sovereign country, the elites and their mouthpieces know better. That divide is why the "51st state" discussion is so weird. My latest.

NEW: The Maple has created a database containing profiles of 85 Canadians that have fought for Israel, the largest collection of such names and stories in Canada, by far. Check out the new project by @davidemastracci.bsky.social. findidfsoldiers.com

I didn't listen to the fiasco that was Cross Country Check-up yesterday, with its platforming of pro-annexationist Canadians, but it sounds like it was an object lesson in why nationalism is not the answer to any of this:

It's difficult to make common cause with people who romanticize the status quo, pretending the project of "america" and of "canada" are not ongoing colonial endeavors that have always privileged some over others. We can fight against fascism without fighting for the status quo.

Why conflict mineral narratives don’t explain the M23 rebellion in DR Congo. It is grounded in a colonial worldview, where Western producers and consumers are the ultimate arbiters of suffering in eastern DRC - @newhumanitarian.bsky.social

CD supports our long-time columnist and contributor Yves Engler and urges the Montréal police to drop these outrageous charges for social media posts opposing Israel's apartheid and genocide. 👇

🚨 Canada claims to support free speech—unless it challenges war crimes. TOMORROW, World BEYOND War board member Yves Engler will be jailed for opposing Israel’s genocide and exposing police repression. This is criminalizing dissent. Demand justice NOW! https://buff.ly/3EWYzPU

Yves Engler is a committed researcher-activist who consistently stands up for the rights of people in countries targeted by the Canadian rich. He has been a tireless advocate for Palestinian people and he is facing charges for it. Support him: actionnetwork.org/letters/drop...

Dahlia Kurtz, who is absolutely a genocide monger, has pressed charges against Yves Engler for identifying Kurts as being a genocide denier. Wild. Incredible attack on free speech. yvesengler.com/2025/02/18/i...

"Maybe if Democratic leaders pretended Elon Musk was a 22-year-old Palestinian from Dearborn, Michigan, they’d show more fight."

The status quo can't be what we fight for.

Horrifying Canadian higher ed news: York University, one of the country’s major R1s, is apparently suspending admission to a number of key programs (including GWS, languages, classics, and enviro biology)—very likely auguring cuts. This appears to be straight out of the West Virginia playbook.

The battle between a Canadian mining company and Panama over one of the richest copper-gold mines in the Americas is headed to international arbitration – exposing Canada’s double standard on free trade. #mining #Panama #cobre #commodities www.nationalobserver.com/2024/01/03/n...

“Take your money with you,” said Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, when told about Trump’s plans to cut aid to Latin America, “it’s poison.”

An Israeli man in Miami shot two fellow Israelis, thinking they were Palestinians. After his arrest, he said, “I saw two Palestinians and shot them.” Now, the victims are calling it an antisemitic attack—while chanting “Death to Arabs.”

Don't all of his spaceships explode?

It is possible (and necessary) to fight against the Trump regime's plan to annex Canada while also not fighting for the status quo of "Canada," reaffirming the violent mythologies of Canada's "peaceableness" and (white) "civility."

Right now, for a lot of Canadians the temptation is to ignore Indigenous people because the threats from the US seem way more important. This turn to fervent and ignorant nationalism is a mistake. Don't alienate the people who know more about your "country" than you do. Find common cause instead.

Funny how Palestinian resistance to zionism is demonized as terrorism by this guy, but somehow the settler colonial state is justified in standing on guard against US manifest destiny.

Canada is no longer dealing with a globalizing neoliberalism that extracts surplus value from workers and the Global South. Instead, the US right works through a different regime of accumulation that bears more affinities to mercantilism than the neoliberal order it is in the process of supplanting.

"Here, deep in the Amazon, we are bearing witness to a different side of Canada’s engagement with Ecuador — a Canadian-owned copper mining project that local Indigenous communities see as an existential threat to their way of life."

For V-Day: Will you be my comrade? We who demand a better world act out of love, not hate. We risk it all with obsession of Majnun for Layla. “As a culture worker who belongs to an oppressed people my job is to make revolution irresistible,” Toni Cade Bambera www.feministgiant.com/p/essay-tend...

Always written without any acknowledgement of the immense suffering and deaths because of starvation policies used in the theft of Indigenous lands so they could build the railroad. We aren’t a footnote to settler history. Before the railroad there was slaughter and the destruction of whole nations

People are put off by leftist culture and behaviors, not by the politics. I also think social media behavior amplifies certain behaviors over others— purity testing over collaboration, calling out vs in, etc — which aren’t “leftist” but general contemporary political engagement behaviors.

@nolore.bsky.social As she writes, « There's a very specific look when a white man stands in the arctic in front of the plane that dropped him into town and behind a podium that says Canada First. Plant a flag in the ground and you'd get the full colonial experience.
