There are already so many things that will define Tump's legacy - some that we're aware of, some that remain obscured - but this is probably one of the most critical and most damning. The U.S is no longer a friend to liberty and democracy. Brace.

Thread - I've been thinking a lot about Walter Lippmann’s Public Opinion lately, especially in the context of Musk’s role in dismantling the federal workforce through DOGE. It’s a perfect example of what Lippmann warned about over a century ago.

This is 100%. Almost everything in the constitution is general or implied. The document literally says there's going to be a post office and congress is in charge of setting it up, deciding what it's rules are.

If you would like to learn how to do this kind of writing, I will teach you. I will, if you have no money, do it for free. I will, if you have some money, invite you to my "writing coach" patreon. I will, if you have an institutional budget, charge a fair workshop rate. Lollardfish @ gmail.

It is a temporary victory, but a victory none the less. Which also makes those organisations who pre-emptively gutted DEI initiatives look very weak and very stupid. Then again, it's only a victory if Trump actually acknowledges the loss and doesn't, say, overrule the order...

So will all the grant funding and academic bodies who pre emptively complied reverse course now?

My dad was tortured by the Gestapo for 4 days and thrown in a concentration camp for being in the Norwegian Resistance. Growing up, he would tell me things he learned in the Resistance. I thought, I'm never going to need this stuff. Here's some of those things #Thread

George Washington in 1796 on rising lawless and factionalism: “cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”

Frederick Douglass, formerly regarded as one of the Republican Party’s historical heroes, will apparently be getting noticed less and less these days by this Republican administration.

I'm sure I don't have to point out how utterly wrong this interpretation of the Constitution and the Founders' intentions were. But it is. The Founders crafted the Constitution specifically to AVOID one branch of government having unchecked power.

What is going on here? Why does MAGA hate cancer research? The Trumpists don’t look at a specific budget item or topic - they are engaged in a comprehensive assault against what they have identified as their enemy. In response, we must also develop a holistic view of their political project.

🧵"So this is how liberty dies..." Trump’s first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up. I’ve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9

When making games inspired by history, which seek to reflect something of history, we have to walk a tightrope between silly grimdark interpretations and romanticising the past. I don’t want to perpetuate colonial myths of progress nor pretend things were great, or “natural” before antibiotics. 1/

The uncomfortable truth is the "Trump campaigned on egg prices" thing is something Dems tell themselves to rationalize what happened in November. Trump actually campaigned on hate and abusing power -- and won! The sorry state of the American electorate is a difficult thing to come to terms with.

I agree but when it comes to a lot of this, people, institutions, and businesses are treating it as if it were law because the leader of the free world has shown he’s willing to order his people to find creative ways to punish you if he feels like it, hence

On the one hand, I'm not at all surprised that this is the result of using AI. OTOH, one could argue (as I have) that the internet itself is a place where critical skills are turned off and information is accepted almost without question.

Musk’s team of DOGE incels will show up when the doors open on Monday to take over the government’s central accounting system. There needs to be vigorous pushback on the ground. I sincerely hope there will be. But let’s talk about protests for a second. 🧵

The tariffs are going to raise prices and fuck up the economy of north America. But beware of graphs like this. The Dow is down 1.2%, the Nasdaq 1.6%. We aren't talking about a major event in the stock market (yet)

I keep thinking how lucky it is that Elon Musk isn't Jewish. Then it might look weird that a foreign billionaire spent $1B to elect a president in exchange for the authority to steal your social security information and cancel congressional grants for children's healthcare

This statement has very, VERY troubling implications, not just for the 14th Amendment, but for every amendment. Is the 1st Amendment unconstitutional? The 5th? The 6th?

Trump just defunded the police.

Related, I’ve collected examples of neo-Nazis encouraging their followers to flood this tool (and similar ones) with disinfo over the past couple of days. No idea if/to what extent anyone has done so, but it’s an example of how cross-platform manipulation operations unfold
