They were supposed to be deporting “gang members” and “criminals.” So far, they have kidnapped people working their day jobs and folks lawfully showing up for their immigration court appearances… It was always a lie.

Good god. Horrible horrible. And thank you to KTLA for the article’s accurate wording.

Between @nymag.com‬'s profile of Hegseth's utter incompetence at Defense and the president announcing via social media that the US bombed Iran, I am a bit, uh, concerned about the coming days.

Excellent article that really brings together the many different pieces of Trump's pursuit of dictatorship.

Seeing Democratic members of Congress start to condemn US attack on Iran. Will any Republican member of Congress take a strong stand against US bombing Iran? (The usual test: do any dare disagree with the president?)

All we know is Trump's post, and now reports are coming in that there was bombing. We're not going to know how much damage was done for some time. Tomorrow there may be satellite photos. If a lot of bombs were dropped at Fordo, Natanz, and Esfahan, the Iranian nuclear program is down. 1/

This is how we repay those that helped us?

open.substack.com/pub/contrari... lovely, lovely piece and a reminder of the character of the woman who should have been elected.

Stockton, CA: Heavily armed masked kidnappers drove up in an unmarked car and pulled a landscaper out of his truck and kidnapped him. When the landscaping company owner asked the men what they were doing, the kidnappers assaulted him and pulled out a metal baton.

A basic point: If the US bombs Iran, I expect Iran to counter-attack, now and/or later.

WaPo writes: "The president, who often operates on gut instinct..." I guess meaning he changes his mind a lot on the basis of nothing substantive.

Important step if replicated

Brutal.

It's infuriating how 99% of the coverage of this new war doesn't bother to mention that it is happening because we had an agreement to limit and monitor Iran's nuclear program, which even Trump's own aides said was working, and he blew it up because it was negotiated under Obama.

This piece by @djpressman.bsky.social explores the June 14 “No Kings” protests, opposing what protesters saw as authoritarian executive overreach. These largely peaceful demonstrations coincided with a lavish military parade hosted by the White House. 🔗 tinyurl.com/yfhzruh8 #protests #nokings

In societies that have a reasonably free press, a persuadable bloc of citizens and free and fair elections, the evidence shows that movements are most effective when they remain nonviolent and build broad coalitions. Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

Trump came into office with the JCPOA in force and working. The JCPOA was set up to encourage further progress in transparency and peaceful orientation of Iran's nuclear program. For example, Iran was working toward an IAEA broader conclusion that its program was peaceful. 1/

Keep this kind of detail in mind as you listen to those in US calling for war on Iran.

Millions rally against authoritarianism, while the White House portrays protests as threats – a political scientist explains @us.theconversation.com @djpressman.bsky.social theconversation.com/millions-ral...

My team and I at the Crowd Counting Consortium (@[email protected], Soha Hammam, & Chris Shay) have a new piece out: wagingnonviolence.org/2025/06/amer.... In it, we show that through May 2025, the size and scale of anti-Trump protests have dwarfed those in 2017. 🧵

The only way I've been able to describe the NYMag cover story on Israeli war crimes this morning is "extremely dark and extremely well reported." nymag.com/intelligence...

Thinking back to Trump boasting about how Hamas’s attack on October 7th and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine never would have happened on his watch. And yet, for some reason, Israel just kicked off a war with Iran with his prior knowledge. So strange.

Does any country have a leader - with a quality diplomatic supporting cast - who can try vigorously to de-escalate the Iran-Israel war?

Anyone looking for a good estimate, check out the Crowd Counting Consortium by @chenoweth.bsky.social and @djpressman.bsky.social—they’ve been doing this since Trump 1 and the data are sound!

Can someone explain this @nytimes.com article to me? It claims protestor and police violence in LA is in "eyes of the beholder," then reports three incidents where police initiated the violence. That total disconnect didn't arouse the reporters' curiosity about the article's thesis?

This is a huge point. Neither national party makes an unabashed case for 1) the positivity of immigration for our society and 2) the tremendous value we get from a well-functioning, well-funded, professionally run Federal government.
