Temperature is the new rainfall… except it’s typically used by researchers as a covariate instead of an instrument. But the same criticism applies: just because we can’t choose temperature doesn’t mean it is exogenous.

🚨PUBLICATION ALERT📰 On the latest number of the J. of Econ. Perspectives @‪aeajournals.bsky.social‬, our own @dlmillimet.bsky.social published an insightful paper about Yair Mundlak's (1927–2015) contribution to econometrics. Congrats to Dan and Marc Bellemare! www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

Ahhhh, made it to London. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Conference #1 this summer is up next week. Looking forward to meeting new people!

Fixed-effects estimators, pretty much like the part of the econometrician's toolbox developed before 1970s, originated in agricultural econ: a nice history of Yair Mundlak's (theoretical and applied) contributions by M. Bellemare & @dlmillimet.bsky.social pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/... #econsky

Nonclassical measurement error ftw!

Thanks, Josh! It was fun to dive into and write. Marc deserves the credit. It was all his idea and hard work. 🙏

I had a dream last night about running a faculty meeting. I am now fluent in dept chair.

Yes, love the sentiment, but I *hate* that things are so over-simplified. Most policies have distributional effects. There are winners and losers. Tariffs generate net losses, but there are still (likely) some winners. Simplifying it like this dismisses those who are potentially helped by tariffs.

If we stop testing, the scores will stop falling. 🙃 And if we gut the NCES, then we also can’t investigate the issue further. Brilliant! www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/u...

This is not the way to treat the associate chair of the department! She deserves more respect 😂

😂

##EconSky Our seminar speaker for tmr was coming from U Toronto. He was apparently detained (politely) for several hrs by US customs in CA. He was then cleared to travel to the US after his flight had left. Needless to say, no seminar tmr.

RIP Val Kilmer. Undoubtedly his best work and a motivation for everyone to go into academia! 😂

And the USDA thought relocation to Kansas City was rough

When will Trump force Hollywood to reshoot all the Star Wars films to make sure the Empire wins?

Why were we going to war with Yemen anyway?
