Wahoo ... waking up with an R&R on a question that had been bugging me since 2019

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

This is America. The only way you get to be king is if you have your birthday at a fast food place in 1987.

Reviewing a paper this morning --- I am jealous of the authors as they came up with one hell of a question that as soon as I read the abstract, I realized I should have been thinking about this type of thing 5 to 8 years ago but had not thought about it until 1 coffee ago.

If I had known that my both-siding and obsessive focus on “cancel culture” would lead to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians, I might’ve done things differently. No, who am I kidding, I would’ve done things exactly the same.

Can't use any of the classics as the eggs are too expensive youtu.be/LSFaDeRpSHA

The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place): 1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

It's not that it would be "difficult" for Energy and Commerce to hit their $880 billion target without steep cuts Medicaid. It's a mathematical impossibility, given the committee's jurisdiction and constraints of reconciliation.

Important to comment with solid evidence and multiple arguments. With fewer staff, they’ll have a harder time meeting APA standards for proper response.

Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Listening to a brown bag/work in progress talk... and I really should spend more time drinking with the industrial organizational economists

Been thinking a lot lately about how great it would be if only the American literary canon contained a novel about how the American people voted themselves into fascism, with many voters thinking they were just choosing a straight-talking non-politician who could clean up the mess in Washington.

When Queen Victoria’s mourning disrupted the "London Season" (elite marriage market), peer-commoner intermarriage rose by 40%, marital wealth sorting fell by 30%, and peers' political power declined as a result. www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

And that is the last grant I need to submit for the next several weeks!

Rejection day...

Here's an example of the sort of tests I run with "AI" to see if they're still on their bullshit. One of these listed characters doesn't exist in the book. Gemini just plain made them up. Again: what does it get wrong about the things I *don't* know about?

Getting punchy responding to this reviewer on this R&R

I was watching this bullpen the other day...and thought: "Two Seamer"? "Skenes doesn't throw a Two Seamer. " Welp, he throws one now. And a Cutter. Good luck. 🙏

A belated #healthpolicyvalentine based on my fun morning in Taipei: Roses are red Violets are blue In Taiwan an ambulance has a fixed, publicly advertised price And ours should too!

Looking for an audio book that can be enjoyed by four people ages 42, 40, 7 and 6 while doing a jigsaw puzzle. We have access to three libraries - The Westing House, maybe?

Based on the current lawsuits, this appears to be the state of the U.S. government at the moment... (with apologies/thanks to @xkcd.com for the original diagram).

It's also the largest health coverage program in America. You definitely know people who rely on it for their coverage. ANY funding cuts to Medicaid, however they're described (per-capita caps, work requirements, block grants, etc.) will result in vulnerable people losing coverage.

Reminder Medicaid is mostly very sick people, old people, kids and pregnant women #healthPolicy
