I know the Sensible People line is that the tech CEOs aren't *really* committed to the authoritarian-right slide and will definitely just "swing back" in the other direction when the wind changes but I do not believe that this is the case, or that they intend to let the wind change.

Anybody giving OpenAI (or really any of those companies) at this point is a rube of legendary stature.

Ugh, this again. If you have a Shopify account, please report this site (yeezy dot com) that's selling a t-shirt with a swastika on it. Yes, it's Ye again. But I don't care who it is, this is unacceptable. You have to have a Shopify account to report it. www.shopify.com/legal/tools/...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. misrepresented data in making the claim that Sen. Bernie Sanders accepted millions of dollars of campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical industry.

Cirroc Lofton played Jake Sisko on Deep Space Nine. I played Wesley Crusher on The Next Generation. And before this week, he and I never talked about it, until now.

Tom Petty’s songwriting is an amazing track record. Almost no misses across 20 or so albums, including the Wilburys, and Hard Promises is flawless EXCEPT for “Night Watchman”, which I irrationally hate. Don’t know why. I made a playlist without it for listening to the album.

Be like Leah! Ditch Substack! Also, read Leah!

This great, very inspiring, yes. Thanks so much for taking things seriously. Feeling hopeful.

Everyone concerned about data loss right now should learn about the End of Term Web Archive, which I believe has been working on preserving federal websites for the past 8 months. The dataset you fear has been lost may well be here Just an incredible project. Thank you to everyone involved

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

If moving your newsletter from Substack seems overwhelming, both Buttondown and Ghost have processes AND people to help with it. buttondown.com/features/con... ghost.org/docs/migrati...

I want to talk about my move from Substack to Ghost for a second, and what it's been like working with a nonprofit tech company that actually lives its values. Especially if you're a writer still on Subtack, please read. 1/x First of all, about the org: They are a nonprofit, I just met employee +

Share this far and wide. So many great people are still using Substack.

I think it would be funny for a DEVO tribute band like @suburbanrobots.bsky.social to cover DEVO covering NIN. youtu.be/LhL8Sl3dWl8

I learned last week that at least some of the farm toys I had are still in my parents’ garage. I thought they’d all been donated away years ago. (My paternal grandparents had a 160 acre farm and I was, natch, obsessed with the tractors.)

Noticing a common theme across the marginalized communities I’m in (pagan, queer): people under 25 are only engaged online & don’t know how to access these communities in person. Some ideas for event organizers:

Was asked to paint a pair of shoes for Hamilton Winterfest. Pretty happy with how they turned out (the theme was "space"). Should remember to post more art (which means I should remember to more drawing/painting)

This is why STEM ed is so important. It’s not that blue things don’t burn, it’s that very hot fires burn the red pigment out of purple things, leaving the blue. Duh.

This is true, and it’s the actual origin of the phrase “snail mail”.

we never liked sports betting to begin with but if you're legally obligated to show self help phone numbers in order to advertise your product maybe you just shouldn't be allowed to advertise it

So there’s a pretty long segment in this week’s On the Media podcast about music and AI. It’s by a musician who first worries about losing his livelihood but then decides maybe it’s not so bad. It’s mostly disappointing … 1/6

Now that we know the working capitalist definition of AGI — yeilds $100 billion in profits — we have clear paths to keeping "AGI" from ever taking hold: make them pay content creators, bust up their monopolies, enforce privacy laws, & tax the motherfuckers into oblivion. Poof. No AGI.
