Ten years after the Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, some advocates fear the fight for marriage equality isn’t over. Among them is Jim Obergefell, the case’s plaintiff. nbcnews.to/44k6Nee

Keine Regenbogenflagge auf dem Bundestag? Dann halt direkt auf der Tribüne! Liebe Grüße an Julia Klöckner 🙃🏳️‍🌈

I have spent most of my life among the largest and oldest organisms on Earth. One gift of this work is a sense of optimism. With the election of Zohran Mamdani in New York (where I am from), perhaps we can finally begin to restore civil society after the disease of neoliberalism. Let's go!

This “big, ugly bill” is dangerous and will destroy rural health care. In Kentucky alone, 35 hospitals are under the threat of closing, stripping care from families, cutting jobs and crippling local economies. 1/2

She is so lovely and immense. !

A federal program to protect US cities against extreme heat has just evaporated

Take it from the people administering these programs every day. Cuts to SNAP aren’t about eliminating waste, fraud, or abuse. They’re about abandoning families who need help the most to give a massive tax break to those who need it least.

The National Park Service and U.S. Park Police close Dupont Circle Park, widely known as the heart of Washington’s LGBTQ neighborhood, ahead of the final weekend of WorldPride, an international Pride celebration being held in the nation’s capital this year.

It was on Normandy's beautiful beaches at the crack of dawn on June 6, 1944, that the Allies finally gained a foothold in France, and Nazi Europe began to crumble. Freedom was at risk — and to defeat Nazism, 47 nations worked together, heroically, for an ideal much greater than any one country.

Bright green food in Asia is made with pandan leaves, Pandanus amaryllifolius. It has an amazing story: Known originally from the Molucca islands of Indonesia, it is now extinct in the wild. It is a cultigen - a crop plant known only in cultivation. Thanks to @acidlich.bsky.social for the reminder.

Cool! @ricksteves.bsky.social, who has a lot of experience telling people where to go, is telling people to go to NoKings.org. See y'all in the streets on 6/14.

Tech and fossil fuel oligarchs threaten our society. The AI scam steals our jobs and threatens our climate, water, and energy. We need to fight back. How? Reject AI, embrace Nature. We need to find more satisfaction in the natural world and reject the greed of the oligarchs. More to come tomorrow.

It's an important year for Pride. The taco fascists are trying to break us up into weak, conflicted groups. So let's be extra loud and unified in celebration of Pride, especially for our trans friends and relatives. June 7 is the Freedom to Be Visible parade.

At the request of a friend. I’m posting one of my dear tree friends. My Goddess Tree.

World Pride, a biannual international event, typically draws more than a million visitors from around the world and across the LGBTQ spectrum.

@tomkimmerer.bsky.social You live a beautiful life filled with gratitude.

Our blue academic city in the middle of a sea of red, mostly rural counties means that we have the capability to respond to a disaster with heavy equipment, highly trained search and rescue and EMT personnel, and attachments to sophisticated medical centers. We must try not to forget this.

Some trees, such as ash and hemlock, are headed for extinction because of pests and pathogens that humans introduces. There is hope: scientists are working hard to identify and propagate resistant trees. The Republican Party, though, is destroying American science, and dimming hopes for these tree.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature.”― Rachel Carson

In dark and challenging times, I remember that there is still goodness in the world. Right now I find hope in the fact that there are people out there, like you, who care, and who want to make the world a more just, welcoming, inclusive, and safe place. Thank you for all you do—a big hug to you!

The elevation of Pope Leo XIV is a profound and historic occasion. Like so many around the world, I am praying for him and wishing him and the Church well as his papacy begins.

He thinks revenge is leadership and trolling is governance. Stop the #MadKing

Independent bookstores have been dependable holdouts amid the growing conservative push, with many proudly featuring “Banned Book” sections, but in Florida’s Escambia County — arguably ground zero for the country’s book censorship battle — even a beloved indie bookstore isn’t immune.

A fine small tree is in flower. Fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus, is seen by most of us as a popular ornamental tree, but in forested lowlands and savannahs in the eastern US, it is often abundant. It lines the Rockcastle River in southern Kentucky in an explosion of white flowers. Happy Spring!

An evening prayer for ash trees, Fraxinus. The majority of ash trees are in decline or at risk of extinction. Most North American ash trees are threatened by emerald ash borer; European ash trees are threatened by ash dieback. The prayer is that we exert enough resources to prevent their extinction.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the Supreme Court’s newest member, denounced on Thursday what she described as "relentless attacks" on judges, and an environment of harassment that "ultimately risks undermining our Constitution and the rule of law."

Later this month periodical cicada Brood XIV will emerge from the soil. They have emerged every 17 years for centuries in a noisy riot of 3 cicada species. It is useful if we report cicada observations to help scientists understand their biology. Get the safari app here: cicadasafari.org

The 'Fulton, ex Baird, Tuscan-Medici' viola made by Antonio Stradivari in 1690 has joined the collection of the US Library of Congress. The viola, priced at $30 million, is a treasure, and shows the ability of great museums to conserve our culture and history. It belongs now to the American people.

"His Burlington courtroom was packed on Wednesday with supporters of Mr. Mahdawi, who remained hushed as the judge issued his order..." www.nytimes.com/2025/04/30/n...

You and I are participants in genocide. The trump-musk-vance-kennedy cabal likes killing people. A weak congress and complicit media are co-conspirators. Public health is being crippled. USID is our greatest foreign policy program, and cuts to it will kill 25 million people. We have to stop killing.
