Bright green food in Asia is made with pandan leaves, Pandanus amaryllifolius. It has an amazing story: Known originally from the Molucca islands of Indonesia, it is now extinct in the wild. Our blue academic city in the middle of a sea of red, mostly rural counties means that we have the capability to respond to a disaster with heavy equipment, highly trained search and rescue and EMT personnel, and attachments to sophisticated medical centers. We must try not to forget this.

A fine small tree is in flower. Fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus, is seen by most of us as a popular ornamental tree, but in forested lowlands and savannahs in the eastern US, it is often abundant. It lines the Rockcastle River in southern Kentucky in an explosion of white flowers. Happy Spring!

An evening prayer for ash trees, Fraxinus. The majority of ash trees are in decline or at risk of extinction. Most North American ash trees are threatened by emerald ash borer; European ash trees are threatened by ash dieback. The prayer is that we exert enough resources to prevent their extinction.
