“Strongman” politicians project their supposed strength by attacking immigrants, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. But these groups of people aren't the "threats" we should be worried about. Who is? The oligarchs who earn their keep by exploiting the rest of us.

On June 7, 1968, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his iconic “Mr. Bojangles”, based on a night he spent in a New Orleans jail for drunkenness. Sammy Davis Jr. and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band both had hits with the song, that has also been covered by Dylan, Belafonte, John Denver, and Neil Diamond.

On June 7, 1911, Arthur Collins & Byron G. Harlan recorded Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band," which held the top spot for 10 weeks. I played the song at my first piano recital at age 8.

On June 7, 1969, The Johnny Cash Show made its debut on ABC, as a summer replacement series. Bob Dylan sang a duet with Cash on "Girl From the North Country" and Joni Mitchell performed "Both Sides Now."

As I’m casually following this story, I read that officials said this escaped convict probably fled the state. Then later, he was captured a couple of miles from the prison. So either 1) the prison sits on the state borderline, or 2) he decided to come back. Maybe he didn’t like Missouri.

The personal choice vaccine argument falls apart when babies die from preventable viral diseases due to their parents’ choices.

The Republican Party has fully embraced fascism and destroyed American democracy. But AOC said the girls are fighting. I have never felt more politically homeless.

Since Trump, in 5 months, unemployment is soaring and gross domestic product is falling. Demand for US goods is decreasing, so companies will reduce employees and output. Trump’s economy is designed to fail. And now that the world recognizes his weaknesses, international trade will only get worse.

It seems we CAN build bananas in the U.S. Musk and Trump have proven how quickly things can be made BANANAS.

Unemployment in U.S. What happened in January 2025?

So, Elon Musk’s rocket ship company, his social media outlet, and his young son - they’re all named X? If I had wanted to name my son after the dog, my wife would have murdered me in my sleep.

On June 6, 1956, the Miles Davis quintet recorded “Bye Bye Blackbird” with John Coltrane, for the “Round Midnight” album. This is one of my favorite Davis’ recordings. The song itself originates from 1926, and was notoriously played by racists in the U.S. south, taunting civil rights marchers.

On June 6, 1982, 85,000 people showed up at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for the “Peace Sunday” concert featuring an all-star lineup, to promote nuclear disarmament.

On June 6, 1960, Roy Orbison's "Only the Lonely" was released in the US where it reached #2 pop. In 1969, Sonny James’ cover became #1 on the country charts. The title and the song were used for the 1991 film, with John Candy. Orbison’s version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

Uh oh, Elon may be headed for Venezuela…

We don’t make bananas like we used to.

worth remembering that when Trump announced a travel ban in 2017, people literally went to airports to protest. Eight years later, Trump announces a new one and it's not even front page news. We're the frogs and the water is getting awfully hot.

A "significant share" of companies surveyed by the Federal Reserve said they raised the prices of goods and services unaffected by tariffs. One company said they did this to "enjoy the extra margin before tariffs increased their costs." See the problem here? www.axios.com/2025/06/04/t...

“I think people should know that research that they probably would support is being canceled,” said Eden Tanner, a chemist at the University of Mississippi. “I would like to cure brain cancer,” Dr. Tanner said. “I think that's not particularly controversial.” www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

On June 5, 2001, Alligator Records released the CD album “Ain’t Gonna Hush” by Saffire - the uppity blues women. I’m a huge fan of their music; it’s fun, funny, innovative, and feminist. And very blues.

On June 5, 1970, Bob Dylan recorded 5 songs to be included on his “New Morning” album, including “The Man In Me”. The song was famously featured in the 1998 film “The Big Lebowski”, playing during the titles and in the hallucination sequence after the Dude is punched unconscious and his rug stolen.

On June 5, 1951, Louis Jordan recorded “How Blue Can You Get?”, later covered by BB King, Albert Collins, Johnny Lang, Cyndi Lauper, and Tedeschi Trucks Band. It was released as the B side of the single “If You’re So Smart, How Come You Ain’t Rich?” One single with both titles questions.

For years we've heard from the right about "welfare queens" and other so-called "freeloaders" pulling one over on the government. But actually, it's the wealthy who are the real freeloaders — pulling one over on us all by skirting their taxes. Where is the outrage over that?

Billions of dollars of high-quality peer-reviewed science grants, awarded for competitive excellence - cancelled so billionaires can have lower taxes. Destruction of our science infrastructure. Madness. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
