You’re playing a game and you find a numerical code or password that is clearly crucial to unlock progress later on. How do you record this? There is no log or inventory of codes like this. What do you think the game designer intended?

I often think about this sage gamedev wisdom from @sylviefluff.bsky.social A good game designer hides things from cuties.

(migrating an Important Post) @docky.games is who did the Is It A Bird Is It a Plane, aaaand this is from when they were doing an initial swing at the SkateBIRD pink bird

@pewpewbang.bsky.social was really fun. Excited for future episodes! Love Janet’s description of Ms Pac-Man as Yassified Pac-Man. I love that little arcade cabinet.

I love the idea of CRT shaders as a separate layer from the software. I wish consoles would build shaders like this into the OS layer.

‘Fail fast’ is a misnomer. Sometimes you make a game prototype and realise it isn’t fun, or you identify a huge problem with the gameplay. A failed prototype is a huge success. You identified some major problems before investing too heavily. You now have excellent experience for the next step.

I love that you don’t have to be good at programming to make games. Programmers are often portrayed as intelligent, but many of their ‘facts’ about development are outdated, with optimisations that are no longer relevant. Anyone can write code. It isn’t that hard. Give it a go!
