"As a first step, Get Free is leading a first 100 days campaign to mobilize young people across race and place to establish what we’re calling “freedom beacons” across the country. "

I want every Democrat to sound like this. Meanwhile I'm listening to the sounds of (congressional) silence.

Tilda Swinton yesterday called out greed addicted governments who make nice with planet wreckers and war criminals. She gave this powerful acceptance speech when she received an honorary Golden Bear award on the first day of the Berlin Film Festival on February 13.

Folks: I am NOT affiliated with the group that is using my name to support an economic boycott. Please spread this post, if you would.

World's richest man ends America's modest aid to the world's poorest people. I'm not a big believer in hell, but willing to make an exception

Congressman Jamie Raskin live now. This is the strong stuff we wanted.

Elon Musk illegally seized the purse strings of the United States. An unelected billionaire may have access to everyone’s social security numbers.   We need answers now. This power grab cannot stand.

"in times like these to have you listen at all, it’s necessary to talk about trees" Hear Adrienne Rich (who would have had a lot to say about our times) read her stunningly timely poem "What Kind of Times are These": https://www.themarginalian.org/2017/01/01/adrienne-rich-reads-what-kind-of-times-…

Bodhi the Lab - I don’t care that it’s 40 mph winds - just give me the ball.

The Department of Homeland Security announced Friday that it will extend the temporary protected status of hundreds of thousands of South American immigrants living in the United States.

Imagine if there was a news outlet dedicated to highlighting the crimes of white men in their 30s. Every time a white man in his 30s was arrested, it would be depicted as a trend, with a call to crack down on all white men in their 30s. That’s what Fox is doing, except with undocumented immigrants.

Lucille Clifton, always.

This sums it up, yes.

Hello, darkness, my old friend.

I have always really appreciated Jacqueline Rose's description of feminism as a theory & practice that combines political demand with radical self questioning.

"When I Am Among the Trees" – Mary Oliver's spare and stunning ode to serenity

Nobody wants a student essay as a product; we want students to learn to compose their thoughts in written form as a process. I mean, would you have a machine run your laps or play your scales for you? In which case we would not say you had run or played.

Section 1, of the 14th Amendment:

So much in here: Audre Lorde on poetry as an instrument of change and feeling as the antidote to fearing

What is the working class? Many invoke it in this election, but no one defines it. How much is it economic, when a plumber can make 10x as much as adjunct professor? How much is it cultural/an identity, or the kind of labor? Why so many 1930s white-guy versions when so many are women and BIPOC?

Much of the food you eat this holiday season comes to your table from the hard-working hands of farm workers who harvest our food. #WeFeedYou

Trump has loaded his cabinet with men credibly accused of sexual assault. So, naturally, the media, with MAGA’s guidance, is focused on… whether one trans woman should be allowed to use a bathroom. The American press never fails to fail covering this guy and his sexually deviant posse.

What worries me is that most Americans will simply ignore what is being done in Washington over the next couple of years. They'll turn on the football game, watch an episode of the Real Housewives of Someplace, and ignore it as fundamental freedoms and crucial institutions are carved away.

This @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social essay perfectly captures David's exuberant weirdness, and his unguarded genius. We lost him far too soon. www.theguardian.com/books/2024/n...

When I and Howard Zinn before me talk about the unexpected, we're mostly talking about things like the fall of the Berlin Wall or 9/11 or the Zapatista uprising. But we can now add to that list INFOWARS SOLD TO CORPORATE OVERLORDS OF THE ONION.

We’re about to find out whether there are any patriots among Republican Senators, or whether they’ll make excuses for the foreign-backed demolition of our Republic that is now plainly underway.

More public art today: this is the Chicago Cultural Center, formerly the Chicago Public Library. Near Millennium Park, it is truly spectacular.

Throughout this election cycle a lot of people have suggested that Trump is bluffing about his deportation plans and all of the ideas in Project 2025 but he wasn’t bluffing. And I don’t think people understand how horrible the mass deportations are going to be. They want to remove 15 million people!

Today my niece, who was born here in the US, asked if we could be deported even though her Haitian American parents were also born here. That’s how things are going with this open season on immigration. If this kid is worried we can imagine how others from all immigrant populations are feeling.

My wonderful publishers at Haymarket Books and I just made Hope in the Dark a free download for a week And yeah, I know I haven't been around much--three platforms is a lot, and I reach a lot of people on one and read a lot of key sources on the other. www.haymarketbooks.org/books/791-ho...

11pm, November 5, 2024 They want you to feel powerless and to surrender and to let them trample everything and you are not going to let them. You are not giving up, and neither am I.

This is a nightmare scenario. Musk and Ramaswamy will dismantle the federal workforce - putting hundreds of thousands - many who are military veterans - out of work. www.nbclosangeles.com/news/nationa...
