Gregory Isaacs - Lovers Rock Dec 82. No UK chart placing. Double album compilation of the last 2 albums. ‘The Lonely Lovers’ is a slightly better album than ‘More Gregory’ with a touch more spirit added to the languid nature of the genre. 5/10 & 5.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Allez Allez - Promises. Dec 82 No UK chart placing. Opens with the evocative seriousness & The Banshees-like ‘Valley Of The Kings’. Very good start. Decent pop funk follows but doesn’t quite follow up the initial promise. (No pun intended) 7/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

God. This is sub Smokie isn’t it? #totp

Of course this was the title of her album! #totp

If only there were some Big Daddy gobstopper equivalents

There have been loads better UK Eurovision entries than this that haven’t got near to winning. But populism is as populism does #totp

This is more like it ❤️ #totp

It’s that goth indie chick I used to fancy in the 90s. Oh *picks up glasses* sorry it’s Brian Molko. Terrific single btw. #totp

Barlow doing his Building Society advert music again. Yawn #totp

Saved by Olivsk. Please let the next episode be 500% better #totp

Ooh I bought this one. ‘You’re Not Alone ‘ is a banger. #totp

PLAY SUSAN’S HOUSE! #totp

Suzi Quatro - Main Attraction. Dec 82. No UK chart placing. A split personality of an album that makes me think Kimberley switched off 1/2 way through. Smokie style country pop on side 1 & some wonderful well produced synth songs on side 2. Great. 9/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Our best of 1971 episode is out on Sunday morning. Here's the 30 songs chosen by @killminus.bsky.social @ineeddirection.bsky.social & @newpathstohelicon.bsky.social What do you think will win? What do you think SHOULD win? What songs would you have picked? open.spotify.com/playlist/36G... #podcast

Led Zeppelin - Coda. Dec 82. UK Peak: 4 The cutting room floor material. I’m not much of a fan beyond Physical Graffiti & there’s nothing on here that I’d say is essential. A lot of flailing around mostly but the musicianship is stunning in places 6/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

So sad to hear of Rick Buckler’s recent passing. This is recent interview of him by the excellent Strange Brew podcast #riprickbuckler

A new season from the chaps is back! Which decade will be crowned champions this series?

Pat Benatar - Get Nervous. Nov 82. UK Peak: 73. If there is ‘Yacht Rock’ then this is ‘Mall Rock’, the consistent soft commercial bubblegum as edgy as a branch of Denny’s. Pretty average aside from ‘Looking For A Stranger’. Peaked at 4 in the US. 5.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Shakatak - Invitations. Nov 82. UK Peak: 30. Inoffensive jazz pop with occasional vocals & emphasis mainly on the instrumental flourishes. It’s fine but I can’t bring myself to any strong emotions either way 6/10 #smashitsalbumreviews

Psychic TV - Force The Hand Of Chance. Dec 82. No UK chart placing. Despite a gruesome cover that a thrash goth band might reject, the music is clean sounding 80s prog with an overall calm tone in contrast to their much weirder output. 6.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Winston Groovy - African Girl. Dec 82. No UK chart placing. Amiable but authentic reggae with covers of ‘Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone’ & ‘Please Don’t Go’ plus closing with a future UB40 cover of ‘Please Don’t Make Me Cry’ 6.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - Men Without Women. Nov 82. Add a big dollop of 80s Springsteen to a side of Dylan & you have the sound. ‘Princess of Little Italy’ probably the most interesting track. 6 bandanas/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

It’s Kevin Rowland on the front cover of Smash Hits from 9 - 22 Dec 82. Got ‘Thriller’, who hasn’t?, & heard ‘1999’. George Clinton’s ‘Computer Games’ looks like the pick of the bunch from these albums I haven’t heard. #smashhitsalbumreviews

Happy Valentines Day.

Eric Stewart - Frooty Rooties. Nov 82. No UK chart placing. Could’ve been a 10cc album follow up. Bright soft rock with a lush & dreamy quality in places. 1 track sounds very similar to ‘Come Together’ in the verse. Amiable 6.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

The Reddings - Steamin’ Hot. Nov 82. No UK chart placing. Decent enough funk in places but the ineffective balladry just makes this lukewarm. Does a decent if not particularly memorable cover of Daddy Otis’ most recognisable hit. 6/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Wah! - The Maverick Years 80-81. Nov 82. No UK chart placing. As described by Peter, it’s dense, claustrophobic & delivered so very earnestly. Never sounds like they’re having much fun but there’s a song called ‘The Bible Or Maths’ so there you are. 5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Mick Karn - Titles. Nov 82. UK Peak: 74. Deborah’s right. Mick goes further down the Tin Drum rabbit hole with this pan Asian experimental album. The only song with much structure is ‘Sensitive’ otherwise it’s very uncommercial. 5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

China Crisis - Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms. Nov 82. No.21. 2 pop pearls in the form of ‘Christian’ & ‘African & White’ but other than that it’s bit lacking in sparkle but Neil’s review is fair enough. 6/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Long After Dark. Nov 82. UK Peak: 45 Mostly unremarkable but nice clutch of middling rock songs but redeemed by the gentle & sweet closer ‘A Wasted Life’ which is like Springsteen but in a good way. I’m a bozo, David 5.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

Unorthodox but a magical win.

Gary ‘Davis’. Quack whack oops. @chartmusictotp.bsky.social

Eddy Grant - Killer On The Rampage. Nov 82. UK Peak: 7. Harsh mark from Ver Hits. The powerful 1-2 of ‘Electric Avenue’ then ‘I Don’t Wanna Dance’ is followed by plenty of sun kissed Caribbean melody & other songs of note but can plod at times. 6.5/10 #smashhitsalbumreviews

So over the weekend my viewing schedule is football, football, rugby, rugby, football, football, rugby, football.

Nice of you to finally turn up, Utd

I thought people were overplaying these Man Utd worst squad comments but no, on this evidence of what I’ve seen, they are incredibly ordinary. Leicester are deserving of this lead.

Some Ballerina wandered in by mistake #totp

‘Reap some hay, country boy’ #theshirehorses #totp

Mark & Lard should have had the gig full time #totp

‘Mama’ is just a lovely warm pop song. That is all. #totp

Remembering the brass neck of Marti Pellow calling Morten Harket smug in Smash Hits #totp

Supertramp - Famous Last Words. Nov 82. UK Peak: 6. A perfectly US record buying public pleasing set of songs in the main apart from ‘It’s Raining Again’ which was the stand out track & at least worthy of a No.26 position in the UK charts. #smashhitsalbumreviews
