In 1997, Hungary was the first country in the former Eastern Bloc where a Pride march was held, marking the country's pioneering role in LGBTQ+ rights. Now, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wants Hungary to be the first EU country to ban Pride in public. Read more here: www.politico.eu/article/hung...

Wondering how to process last weekend's election results in Germany? We were too... Thankfully @tabouchadi.bsky.social and @emiliaroig.bsky.social very kindly agreed to share their thoughts with us.

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

When is the last time you sent an email to tell them you enjoyed their work? 🤔 I regularly send a quick email to colleagues to say I enjoyed their article/book or admire their work. You would be surprised to see how much even the most successful people appreciate this! ❤️

One year ago today.

I know there are some more important things happening in the world right now, but if I were President of the world, my first decree would be to ban audiences from clapping along to music. #BAFTA

I’m in Munich and people keep asking me to decode Vance’s speech. OK: In Vance English “free speech” means “Let Musk run your elections” and “democracy” means “let Russia run your elections.” Now move on. 2025 is about what Europeans do, not what Americans say.

1. A common mistake is to look for ideological consistency on the far right, and to become confused when some of the things it claims to stand for sound positive and even progressive. Here’s a thread on how to understand this. 🧵

Those proclaiming “it's over for the EU” fail to recognise how resilient it is. The EU always builds its boats in the middle of storm. Failure to adequately or fully prepare for Trump 2.0 does not preclude a stronger Union on the other side

“there are Neville Chamberlain’s in every generation” George Monbiot’s takedown of Matt Goodwin and the Reform party is a thing of beauty 👏 #bbcqt

Still internalising the Vance Munich speech. A sitting Vice President goes to Europe, barely says a word about the despotic murderous regime which has invaded its neighbour, and instead lectures his allies about freedom of speech. It’d be funny if it weren’t so serious.

I struggle to express just how *weird* Vance’s #MSC2025 speech was. This is a transatlantic security conference, happening while there is a war in Europe, and the US is announcing a partial withdrawal from European security. And the US VP speaks about (alleged) threats to free speech in Europe??

🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨 Nocturnal tourism is supposedly one of the big travel trends of 2025, and from star-gazing to truffle-hunting, there are plenty of places in Europe to do it. But where is this craving for darkness coming from? www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

The Netherlands fined a teenage refugee after he took too long to complete a series of language and cultural tests aimed at helping newcomers adapt to Dutch life.

Excellent episode about the first, shocking, ten days of the 2nd Trump presidency. One small critique for @mehdirhasan.bsky.social: next time please let @naomiaklein.bsky.social finish her thought about The Traitors. And please Naomi write an essay about what that show says about society today :-)

Wow. it must feel terrible when someone takes something you made and uses it without permission or payment

Crown shyness is a phenomenon where trees' uppermost branches avoid touching, forming natural negative space

A violent criminal? A threat to society? A danger to democracy? No, no and no. This is someone being punished again and again for giving a damn about humanity and the living world. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

European art-activists starting to target Musk:

Very fun interview with a drag cow this week, touching on everything from human-cow weddings to joyful activism. Don't miss this one!

Yes, I did just change my handle so that I match with @katyinparis.bsky.social.

BREAKING: A Dutch court has just ruled in @greenpeace.nl's favour in a crucial case about protecting nature. According to the judge, the government has not done enough to reach the nitrogen targets. The government must reach their 2030 targets and otherwise will have to pay Greenpeace €10 million.

This does not surprise me in the slightest and it gives me an opportunity to get on my high horse and complain about the fact that houses in the Netherlands only have cold water taps in their toilets so even if you DO wash your hands, where's the suds?!? www.euronews.com/health/2025/...

Serbian authorities are using advanced phone spyware alongside mobile phone forensic products to unlawfully target journalists, environmental activists and other individuals in a covert surveillance campaign, a new Amnesty International report has revealed www.amnesty.org/en/latest/ne...

The global crackdown against climate activists and groups is clearly part of the fossil fuel industry’s strategy to crush dissent and keep burning the planet www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Dutch journalist Ingeborg Beugel has been handed a shocking 8-month suspended sentence for helping a refugee. MEP @tinekestrik.bsky.social says the Greek court is participating in 'the criminalisation of helping refugees who are abandoned by the government'. www.groene.nl/artikel/crim...

I present to you the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

This clever petition to widen access to safe abortion in Europe, which we mentioned on the show a couple of weeks back, is nearing its goal of 1 million signatures! Anyone who's an EU citizen can sign. If this speaks to you, please consider adding your name: www.myvoice-mychoice.org

“Whatever you think of him - and it's not pretty of course - that man will not go away… We must also see whether we should have contacts with Assad” - Geert Wilders, four weeks ago nos.nl/l/2543389

I'm so glad that Eurostar are finally getting called out for their rip-off prices and terrible service (rant over): www.theguardian.com/world/2024/d...

Pet peeve in TV/film: when they too briefly show a glimpse of a message containing vital plot information on a mobile phone. The writing is so often too small and I often end up having to rewind and pause. The Madness (Netflix) was a repeat offender.

Ok, ours is pretty good

So the German and French governments have both collapsed. Meanwhile we're waiting for new coalition governments to form in Austria, Romania, Belgium and Ireland (am I missing any other EU countries for this list?). This isn't normal is it?

This is absolutely not the news I would have dreamed of waking up to. South Korea's Yoon declares emergency martial law. to I have some scattered thoughts to follow. m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2024...

So a reminder: It’s not ‘liberals’ saying Hegseth abuses women. It’s his mom. It’s not ‘liberals’ comparing Trump to Hitler. It’s his vice-president. It’s not ‘liberals’ calling Musk a liar and a racist. It’s his own child. For the record.

Seven years ago today, @dominickraemer.bsky.social and I published the first episode of The Europeans, an attempt at a weekly podcast about Europe that wasn’t insanely boring or incomprehensible to people who don’t live in Brussels. Still here, covering topics from Polish politics to testicles 🤗

Can't believe it's been 7 years already!

My one tip for here: there isn't a form of verification on here that is similar to other social media, therefore do not assume a prominent figure on here is who they say they are unless you've verified it. To use a niche reference, "me, has this report": www.logicallyfacts.com/en/article/b...
