A top winter bird, the nomadic, wide-ranging Snow Bunting can be maddeningly tricky to track down in Brooklyn. Some years I don't see them at all, but this one from yesterday was easily approached by using the car as a blind! #birds #birding #carbirding #birdsseenin2025

This is a real bird that exists. I haven’t seen one. Yet.

Here's one that's worth clicking on to appreciate the simultaneous combination of vivid color and remarkable camouflage. Brassy-breasted Tanager, the only one I saw on a two week trip to SE Brazil in July '23. At the spectacular Estrada de Corvo, Parana. #birds #birding #passarinhando

My brother reckons this is the response my nieces give🤔😂😂😂

You may need to click to expand and get a magnifying glass to see the speck in this photo from Paraná, Brazil. I saw this way, way out on the flats and thought 'that is either a piece of red plastic trash or a bird I have been hoping to see for over thirty years' #birds #birds Can you see it? /👉

Should you ever get the chance to go to Reserva Volta Velha in Santa Catarina (Brazil), don't miss it. It's a charming privately-run chunk of coastal forest and savannah with bagfuls of excellent birds, and few visitors. Here's American Pygmy Kingfisher. #birds #birding #passarinhando

birding is fun because it's just a hobby you share with your cats

Quite obviously not a bird, so don't ask me to identify it. This impressive toad was in the middle of the trail in the highlands of São Paulo, about four hours south of the city. I thought it was awesome, until I realized it wasn't even a little bit afraid of me, at which point I became terrified!

Remembering that checklist where someone just eBirded stuffed specimens in a museum display case #eBird #birding #insaneebird

Red crested Cardinal in Salta, Argentina, last November. Ridiculously attractive. Fairly common. At least in that part of the world typically solitary and always a surprise to stumble across. #birds #birding

Brown-capped Redstart in Jujuy, Argentina, last August. In almost every part of the Americas one or another species of redstart seems always to be one of the commonest new world warblers. It’s just a different species depending on where you are. And your altitude! #birds #birding

Went to Staten Island to see a Lapland Longspur. It wasn't there. Drove home. Shortly thereafter someone reported it present again. I fumed. The next morning someone else reported two. I decided that was worth paying the bridge toll again for. Here they are. #birds #birding #birdsseenin2025

Happy #Valentines Day from these two canoodling Blue Crowned Parakeets! #birds #birding. Salta, Argentina, last November.

The situation is so bad on the UK roads that they have now employed Pied Wagtails to inspect the many pot holes... #birds #wagtail #ukwildlife #birdphotography #photography

Cedar Waxwing yesterday while we were methodically searching for a vagrant Bohemian Waxwing on Long Island. By the time I saw this one I was so happy to see any waxwing at all that I lovingly photographed it! #birds #birding #birdsseenin2025

We dipped on the the Smith's Longspur out on Long Island a couple of days ago (in the unlikely event a non-birder is reading this: "dipped" means "failed to see" in birder lingo), but it doesn't matter because I sure do love Snow Buntings! #birds #birding #birdsseenin2025

The temporary Red Hook public library branch is very small, but it sponsors a weekly comics-drawing workshop that is one of my daughter never-miss-it activities.

White-winged Scoter just off the seawall literally underneath the Verrazano Narrows bridge yesterday for #birdsseenin2025. The closest I've ever been to one of these, frankly speaking, incredibly weird looking sea ducks. #birds #birding #birdsnyc
