Ah, the joys of someone coming up with ways to “improve” AskHistorians and knowing their plan would have prevented me from ever posting there. Wait, they might be onto something all along.

🧵 Another week of current events on @askhistorians.bsky.social. There's increased variety from Nazis (finally). Many questions still need answers if any #skystorians want to get involved in crowd sourced history This is a great example of the news driving inquiry: www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

Why do so many fairy tales focus on kings and nobles? Didn’t peasants want to tell and hear stories that they could relate to? It’s a genre classic from /u/itsallfolklore, telling a tale of how tricky folk beliefs can be…

Come check out this very timely AMA today on @askhistorians.bsky.social with @cajohnson-craig.bsky.social discussing the history of fascism! www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

Buckle in #SkyStorians, because we have a fantastic #AMA coming tomorrow! @cajohnson-craig.bsky.social‬ is joining us on AskHistorians to talk about the #history of fascism, and answer all your questions on this topic!

Some reflections from the mod team yesterday on how we are navigating a user-driven pivot towards histories of 'now'. We are not a forum for discussing current politics, but understanding the present has always been one of the main ways that history contributes to civic discourse.

For #LanternFestival here is a picture from a few years ago of Queen Heonae, who ruled Goryeo as regent for her son King Mokjong in the year 1000. I drew her at the Lantern Festival since it was a pivotal festival in her life. Set in Kaesong, North Korea. womenof1000ad.weebly.com/queen-heonae...

🧵 Current events continue to flood @askhistorians.bsky.social, BUT! its not all Nazi Germany questions (its still a lot of Nazi Germany questions). There's a bit of a tonal shift towards what's next and how to effectively protest www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

Monday Miniature of Lily Elsie from the late 1920s, a later representation of her than I'm used to - her career peaked in the 1910s. Her fur cloche and coat seem very appropriate for the weather right now! 🗃️🪡 collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O115507...

News that wiki editors are facing threats from Musk and the Heritage Foundation because of “bias” should be raising alarm bells for platforms that rely on user moderation (basically all of them, but Reddit esp. since its mods have come under fire recently).

AskHistorians is a great form of public outreach! And for historians dooming about the world- users come to us to learn context. We're getting a lot of q's on fascism, civil rights and protest, the Gilded Age, Nazi Germany, citizenship, etc Sharing your knowledge can help bring people comfort!

New pinned post! Hi everyone, I'm Meg! I draw women who lived all around the world 1000 years ago for my Women of 1000 project. womenof1000ad.weebly.com Meanwhile, my PhD research is about music in the lives of Scottish & Irish herring gutters. blogs.ed.ac.uk/s1848641/ Happy to be here! 🏳️‍🌈

We may try and do this with a fuller dataset, but just pulling the most recent 200 hits from the subreddit via @communalytic.org shows that yes, there is a pretty clear inauguration effect at play with our recent submissions...

www.theguardian.com/business/202... My suggestion for their next plan, make people guess which train is which. Provide no information ever and randomize the timetable.

The Nanman is one of the most frequent three kingdom questions we get in AskHistorians. Dangerous terrain, use of animals and magic, the general exoticism of the campaign as Zhuge Liang "civilises" the locals and overcomes the odds. Which makes it a stand-out campaign which games love to play with.

The votes are in and the winners of the 2024 AskHistorians BEST ANSWERS are in! Let’s spend some type shouting out the glorious victors, and the fantastic history they’ve shared!

🧵 @askhistorians.bsky.social continues to receive dozens of highly relevant questions to the contemporary political situation. Here's a thread of the last week-ish, and many still need answers if any #SkyStorians want to contribute! www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

Ramsay Bader was a tank driver in the 147th (Essex Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery of the British Army. As part of the 147th, Bader landed on Gold Beach on D-Day, June 6th 1944. #BlackHistoryMonth #WWII #BlackBritishHistory #MilitaryHistory #DDay

Honored to have had my answer chosen by the expert users of r/AskHistorians as the answer of the year!

Miniature Monday: a portrait of an unknown woman of the 1870s, doing a slightly Georgian Revival thing (the big hair, the fichu). It's by Rosalie Emslie (1854-1932), who was a miniaturist around the turn of the century. collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O118461...

Somewhat belatedly, courtesy of my end of year illness, I've written up my favorite games I played in 2024 along with a brief reflection on how my various gaming projects progressed last year. I went for the arbitrary best 7 + honorable mentions. www.stuartellisgorman.com/blog/2024-in...

Read through the Afterword of the Moss Roberts translation of Three Kingdoms and it's fascinating how much the story and the characters have been remixed and repurposed over centuries, and how the myths about them have been built up over time to suit different purposes.
