There are many ways to study rocks up-close! 🔬💎 These thin section drawings and images are of feldspar-pyroxene xenoliths, brought up from beneath Fagradalsfjall, Iceland, by erupted basalts🌋 #ThinSectionTuesday #Petrology

A most instructive introduction to a very important topic. You all should take the time (about 15 minutes) to play around with the interactive charts.

Spectroscopy is an incredibly useful tool for #NASAWebb to study objects in more depth. For example, transmission spectroscopy is useful for characterizing the composition of exoplanets’ atmospheres: webbtelescope.pub/3uJUKoW 🔭 🧪

The Planetary Society strongly opposes the sudden, indiscriminate dismissal of more than 1,000 scientists, engineers, and explorers at NASA — the largest involuntary workforce reduction since the end of the Apollo program. Read more on our stance. ⬇️

Waking up to the news that the @nasawebb.extwitter.link scheduled our Red Rectangle observations for Tuesday. I am still in awe at the idea that I am using a space telescope to do science. Such a privilege 🔭

Some days ago, the astronomer @rosedf.bsky.social reported on #socialmedia that her bio had been "deleted" from #NASA website she worls for. So I contacted her and tried to find out more. Here the interview for @wireditalia 👇 #STEM #womeninstem #womeninscience www.wired.it/article/inge...

An extraordinary American astronaut and science communicator for #BlackHistoryMonth: Mae Carol Jemison (born 1956) is a physician who became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for NASA, on September 12, 1992. 🧪🐡👩🏾‍🔬 #histsci 🧵

International Day of Women and Girls in Science—a moment to celebrate, but also to ask: why do the numbers still drop so sharply from PhD to professor? In our department, just 13 female academics, only 3 professors. Progress? Yes. Enough? Not even close. #WomenInSTEM

Dear astro folks, with the current crackdown on science in the US, we probably cannot rely on all services provided to the scientific community from the US to function properly in the future and we may need to think about moving them elsewhere. What services would you think of that are […]

As a female academic in her 40s, I think it is extremely important to pay attention to ways in which you get worn down by the constant mini-struggles. As you age, it accumulates and you get to a point where you just can't anymore. This is not just about the extra mentoring or household labor.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']: Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

It’s disheartening to see well-known figures in physics normalize poor behavior by joking about being difficult to work with or claiming superiority. Acknowledging harmful actions without accountability isn’t funny—it sets a damaging example for our community. We must do better.
