Back in the 1990s as I recall, some young man sued his local video shop because the supposedly hardcore porn video was "about as erotic as an episode of Thomas The Tank Engine."

I have a feeling that many future students currently being told to prepare ‘to be shocked and offended’ at university, are going to be very disappointed

Yeah, we did this in the US. Years of telling students that they need to be ready to listen to all sides and then a swift transition to locking them up for writing op-eds in the student newspaper.

It's infuriating how 99% of the coverage of this new war doesn't bother to mention that it is happening because we had an agreement to limit and monitor Iran's nuclear program, which even Trump's own aides said was working, and he blew it up because it was negotiated under Obama.

You never actually own a Honda. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I’ve been running a scenario exercise about Israel pushing the US to join a war on Iran over its nuclear program for over 15 years. This week feels strangely familiar as my hell scenario plays out in real life in real time… abuaardvarkghost.ghost.io/whats-the-wh...

Remember when Brad Lander Caught Kristi Noem Stealing $80 Million? www.emptywheel.net/2025/06/18/r...

I'm not remotely interested in defending Trump, but why should he define what unconditional surrender means? It's a very simple concept.

Conscription has become a hot topic as a possible solution to Europe’s manpower shortages. In this week’s Europe Dispatch with @phillipspobrien.bsky.social, I look at some numbers from the Nordic-Baltic countries, all of which have a conscription system in place.

Palantir rep also said they now operate in 12 European member states but can't say which ones most of them are, because these government contracts are secret. This was said to reassure the audience of Palantir's bona fides. I was not reassured.

This is the fire we need to stoke every day for the next three and a half years. The days of moral victories are over.

Good riddance. Fair weather friends etc

I think that if something like this ever happens to you it is absolutely your responsibility to at least tell a journalist or activist which venue did it. Otherwise you're spreading fear without offering any form of resolution

Israel’s decision to launch strikes against Iran is almost entirely a function of Netanyahu’s domestic political vulnerability and its very weird watching news outlets pretend it isn’t

Choosing the worst moment is something of a DUP speciality.

"No no no you don't understand. I told the racists where all the immigrants were BEFORE they went and set that place on fire.".

There is a long profile of Keir Starmer by Tom McTague in the New Statesman, based on several interviews with PM & his aides over six weeks, to seek to discover "the story" of his government

"If You Lie With DOGE You Get Fleeced." Oh yes, Paul Krugman likes a pun.

Fascinating development: Danish Minister of Digitalization promises to phase out Microsoft from her ministry. (Add other reports of Copenhagen and Aarhus doing same.) Part of a trend I write about in The National Security Internet. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Wouldn't it be nice if more journalists (& others) performed this experiment and drew the obvious conclusion?

I ran an experiment, simultaneously posting articles on Bluesky and X, and then testing to see how many people actually clicked and read them. The numbers on Bluesky are higher, both because the X algorithm downranks journalism, and because Bluesky attracts readers, not just shitposters.

This is a known and long-standing feeling of authoritarian States. People are incentivized to report falsehoods, for various reasons, and therefore leadership doesn't have accurate information to plan against or act on. Baghdad Bob wasn't an accident or a new phenomenon

Video footage has captured the moment an Australian journalist was struck by a rubber bullet on whilst reporting live during the Los Angeles protests

Horrific. Democrats have limited control over federal agents and federalized guardsmen, but the Democratic Governor of California and Mayor of LA can and should start by coming down like the wrath of God on any state and local police officers who get in on the brutality. Fuck the focus groups.

For anyone who thinks I'm joking here (and it's funny, but no) rumor is that the National Guard deployed in LA was sent under a 29 day order to avoid housing allowances, which means they have to fully pay for their own shelter. In LA. Zero notice. Durable fascisms don't shortchange the muscle.

I used to joke that Sensible Moderates would bullshit each other into saluting the generalissimo’s limo as it passes and would fight amongst themselves to be first to kiss his epaulettes.

Jeremy Bowen spells out the problem for Israel trying to deny war crimes: its own ministers have admitted to them www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Jeremy Bowen's long, measured, objective, but ultimately entirely clear and conclusive essay on Israeli war crimes. As Jonathan Sumption puts it: "These things make genocide the most plausible explanation for what is now happening." www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Pete Hesgeth — who wants to rename the Navy ship that honors Medgar Evers, a WWII veteran who landed on Omaha Beach — is using that same beach for a photo op in which he promises we will “never forget” the veterans there. What an unbelievable asshole.

I’ve said it before but it is embarrassing that so many intellectuals spent years in small factional battles over the propriety of calling this fascism.

I think what’s repellent here is that the premise of “The Ethicist” is fundamentally trivial—heyyy a Princeton philosopher agony-aunts your dumb modern manners dilemmas!—and when it’s put to work on a topic like this it’s faintly obscene. Like, wait, you’re serious? You think this is what Ethics is?

He's boasting about deporting children who had been in their school for over 2 years.

In 1936, FDR closed out his re-election campaign by bragging to a massive crowd at Madison Square Garden that “organized money” hated him “and I welcome their hatred.” He took 60% of the vote in a 523-8 electoral college landslide. FDR knew having the right enemies could be a useful thing.

Yes, Mr. Roosevelt, there's a polio vaccine. Yes, sir, this man lies about vaccines. Yes, sir, we think you should embrace him. No? Okay, you're the boss. Now onto this next potential supporter. He's a car manufacturer. Yes, the fellow who did the Nazi salute. Sir, please stop yelling at me.

Europe has entered the chat lmao

Germany would surely welcome any fleeing American rocket scientists associated with the former regime

if the wheels had come off this thing any faster it'd be a Cybertruck

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the government was arming factions in the Gaza Strip to combat Hamas, after accusations from an opposition politician. From @jimbohider.bsky.social and @danielestrin.bsky.social
