#ThenShowing 27 Feb 1962, Seattle P-I LA DOLCE VITA playing the Bel-vue, wonder what the eastsiders thought of it. Fortunately, it's playing closer to home at the Broadway. Daytime matinees for PINOCCHIO (Garden). THE RED SHOES at the Varsity while MURDER (SHE SAID) held over at the Uptown…

You get to choose which Cinema Dissection I’ll lead! Vote through link in original post.

#ThenShowing 26 Feb 1935, Seattle Times Guess I should join the 97,514 people praising BROADWAY BILL (Liberty). Tons Claudette Colbert today, CLEOPATRA (Various) and THE GILDED LILY (5th Ave) opening. John Hamrick offering a money-back guarantee for THE GOOD FAIRY (Music Box)…

#ThenShowing 25 Feb 1970, Seattle Times If I'm going to see KRAKATOA, EAST OF JAVA, it's going to be at Cinerama. That said, I'd prefer to see THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY (UA 70), IF… (Guild 45th), PUTNEY SWOPE (Varsity), JOHNNY CASH (Paramount) and/or SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF (Harvard Exit).

#ThenShowing 24 Feb 1956, Seattle P-I Iconic James Dean in A REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (Green Lake). Do I dare see John Wayne's turn as Genghis Khan in THE CONQUEROR (Orpheum)? Other historical epics screening: HELEN OF TROY (Music Hall), JULIUS CAESAR (Uptown), GUYS AND DOLLS (Blue Mouse)😜.

#ThenShowing 21 Feb 1967, Seattle P-I Snoqualmie Falls Lodge opens tomorrow! Skipping GRAND PRIX (Cinerama) for the A MAN AND A WOMAN+BLACK ORPHEUS (Ridgemont). Will hit the matinee screening of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (Orpheum), then catch the afternoon screening of MODESTY BLAISE (Paramount).

Join facilitator & SIFF Programmer @doodydan.bsky.social for a scene-by-scene investigation tracing every twist and turn of the film’s corkscrew plot to deconstruct what ingredients make for the perfect film noir cocktail. This Cinema Dissection of OUT OF THE PAST (1947) is in sesh 3/1 at the FC.

#ThenShowing 20 Feb 1984, Seattle Times There's a lot of 80s prime cinema today: THE BIG CHILL, YENTL, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, FOOTLOOSE, BLAME IT ON RIO, SUDDEN IMPACT, BLUE THUNDER, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, FANNY AND ALEXANDER, THE RIGHT STUFF, and RETURN OF THE JEDI, etc. And yet…

#ThenShowing 19 Feb 1979, Seattle Times The standout here is WATERSHIP DOWN (Ridgemont). More animation with Bakshi's LORD OF THE RINGS (Guild 45th). Can I find my way up north for THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT (Edmonds)? Wish this week's Kubrick wasn't LOLITA (Harvard Exit)…

#ThenShowing 18 Feb 2025, Seattle P-I Day too early for my fave classic Disney animation SLEEPING BEAUTY but 2 fun swashbucklers playing: THE BUCCANEER (Roosevelt) & 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Garden). Also, AUNTIE MAME (Orpheum), Olivier's HENRY V (Varsity), and Tyrone Power's MARK OF ZORRO (Egyptian).

#ThenShowing 17 Feb 1943, Seattle Times With an ad that big, I have to go see YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (Orpheum). Two unquestioned classics screening, too: CASABLANCA (Roosevelt) and NOW, VOYAGER (Coliseum). Must see Lewton's CAT PEOPLE, might check out the werewolf b-flick UNDYING MONSTER (Paramount).

#ThenShowing 14 Feb 1961, Seattle P-I This evening, there's a choice between epics: BEN HUR (Blue Mouse) or SPARTACUS (Music Box), think my preference is for the latter. THE MISFITS (Coliseum) is adults only. WORLD OF SUZIE WONG (Paramount) and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (Roosevelt) are also good bets.

#ThenShowing 13 Feb 1948, Seattle Times No less than 3 Burt Lancaster noirs playing in town: THE KILLERS (Ridgemont), BRUTE FORCE (Victory), and I WALK ALONE (Blue Mouse). Feel like I need to do TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE (Music Box) and PIRATES OF MONTEREY (Orpheum, Maria Montez😍)… [cont]

#ThenShowing 12 Feb 1954, Seattle Times By wonderful coincidence, the excellent Hawaii-set & shot HELL'S HALF ACRE (Liberty) opens today, also screens Friday (2025) at SIFF Cinema Downtown. There's also never-on-TV HONDO (Lake City) in 3D!… [cont]

#ThenShowing 11 Feb 1975, Seattle Times Drat, a day too early for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN & LENNY. I'll do a matinee of TOWERING INFERNO (Coliseum), then choose between PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE+ZARDOZ (Neptune) or FORBIDDEN PLANET+THE TIME MACHINE (University). Think my preference would be for the latter…

#ThenShowing 10 Feb 1939, Seattle Times Slim pickings to start off the week, but YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is at the Neptune, and despite that awful tagline, I'll go see HONOLULU (Paramount), Marx Bros' ROOM SERVICE (Arabian), and, just because I'll have the time, I guess, ST. LOUIS BLUES (Orpheum)

#ThenShowing 7 Feb 1983, Seattle P-I Sorry, GANDHI has always been the epitome of worthy 80s Best Picture winners to me. Sure, solid craftsmanship, but I'd rather watch TOOTSIE (Cinerama) or FITZCARRALDO (Uptown) or revisit THE DARK CRYSTAL (Egyptian)…

#ThenShowing 6 Feb 1952, Seattle Times The King is dead—long live the Queen. Meanwhile, in Seattle—THE OUTLAW (Capitol) opens, one of the most tedious films I've ever sat through. However, TALES OF HOFFMANN (Music Box) is sublime, and I'd love to see AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (various) on the big screen…

#ThenShowing 5 Feb 1940, Seattle Times MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (Roosevelt) opens today. Need to see HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Liberty), OF MICE AND MEN (Music Box), and INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS (Orpheum), too. Leaving little time for anything else: NINOTCHKA (Coliseum)? ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (sic, EGYPTIAN)?

#ThenShowing 4 Feb 1970, Seattle Times There's a lot of good films here that have been picks previously, so… I'm going to skip JENNY for POINT BLANK (Coliseum)— Then DRACULA, THE DIRTY OLD MAN (New Garden)— Finally, 30s Gangster flicks PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE + LITTLE CAESAR (Harvard Exit)

Join facilitator and SIFF Programmer @doodydan.bsky.social for a scene-by-scene deconstruction of the Coen Brothers’ masterpiece NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. In session this Saturday, 2/8, from 10am-4pm PT at the Film Center!

#ThenShowing 3 Feb 1964, Seattle P-I One of those days where it's easier to stay downtown than venture to outlying cinemas. 1st–COMEDY OF TERRORS (Paramount), 2nd–CHARADE (Blue Mouse), 3rd–"for Baby Jane people" DEAD RINGER (Orpheum)…

#ThenShowing 31 Jan 1946, Seattle Times After struggling earlier in the week, today is easy— LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (Music Box, 6th week!) Hitchcock's SPELLBOUND (Paramount) SCARLET STREET (Orpheum, last day) THE SPANISH MAIN (Blue Mouse); and, THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (Embassy)…

#ThenShowing 30 Jan 1969, Seattle P-I Only a few matinee screenings today, so BULLITT (7th Ave) w/ Costas-Garvas SHOCK TROOP[S]. As for the evening, think I'll forgo the glossier Hollywood fare—i.e. CAMELOT, FUNNY GIRL, OLIVER!, etc—for the foreign art house HAGBARD & SIGNE + TO LOVE (Ridgemont).

#ThenShowing 29 Jan 1974, Seattle Times DAY OF THE DOLPHIN at Cinerama? Sign me up—then, CASABLANCA at the Harvard Exit. Matinees: could head to Renton for THE STING & AMERICAN GRAFFITI or go downtown for SLEEPER + HAROLD & MAUDE (Music Box). And, of course, Disney's ROBIN HOOD (5th Ave)!

#ThenShowing 28 Jan 1938, Seattle Times A common theme this week is that late-Jan is a barren time for cinema releases, so there's really not much today: a few Bulldog Drummond and Charlie Chan B-pics, but I'll just go see the spectacle of HURRICANE (Liberty) on the big screen and call it a day….

New consignment of #TalesoftheWeird books arrived direct from @britishlibrary.bsky.social Publishing…

#ThenShowing 27 Jan 1950, Seattle P-I Think I'll treat myself to a pair of noirs and a pair of westerns. For the former, CHICAGO DEADLINE (Garden) and Otto Preminger's WHIRLPOOL (5th Ave); for the latter, John Ford's SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (Colonial) and Errol Flynn in MONTANA (Blue Mouse).

#ThenShowing 24 Jan 1955, Seattle P-I Two big must-see musicals today: CARMEN JONES (5th Ave), and one last day to see BRIGADOON (Music Hall). Then, if I have the time last day of REAR WINDOW (Magnolia) and opening day of THE EGG AND I (Roosevelt).

#ThenShowing 23 Jan 1978, Seattle Times Only a few matinee (ie daytime screenings), so I could fit in a screening of STAR WARS or CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. Evening is tighter: Turns out JULIA (Guild 45th) wasn't based on a true story. I could see Bertolucci's epic 1900 (7 Gables)…

#ThenShowing 22 Jan 1960, Seattle P-I Comedies abound—Cary Grant in OPERATION PETTICOAT (Music Hall), Peter Sellers in THE MOUSE THAT ROARED! (Music Box), and Hudson & Day in PILLOW TALK (Roosevelt). Might switch out one of those for the Coliseum's double-bill: THE PURPLE GANG + THE COSMIC MAN.

MLB HOF voters—You know what? Sometimes tradition sucks. Mariano Rivera was the first unanimous 1-ballot HOFer, deservedly. It’s OK to have more in the future. Griffey Jr, Jeter, and Ichiro all deserved it, but I guess you gotta have one guy vote no with a 😉 to uphold an outdated world view, right?🤷‍♂️

#ThenShowing 21 Jan 1944, Seattle Times Down day for 1st release films; however, Grant & Arthur in ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS (Metropolitan) is a must see as is Lena Horne STORMY WEATHER (Broadway), and, as always, I have a soft spot in my heart for Claude Raines' PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Admiral).

#ThenShowing 20 Jan 1982, Seattle Times Lot of movies I want to like, but deep down I just don't… GHOST STORY should be a much better and it's paired w/ superior CHANGELING (Valley Drive-In). As a child TIME BANDITS disturbed me; now I marvel at its visuals but still have little fondness for it…
