Framed as a cable from ‘Sir John Freeman’ the forgery referenced ‘incidents’ of US interference in India. A former Labour politician and editor of the New Statesman, Freeman had not accepted a knighthood. Plausible at first glance, closer inspection revealed the cable to be full of clumsy errors. #2

The British concluded the forger was an Indian communist & couldn't believe a Soviet intelligence officer would be so inept. The CIA felt the forgery was the work of Yuri Modin, a KGB officer in the Soviet embassy in Delhi. Modin had, at one time, acted as Soviet controller of the ‘Cambridge Five’.
