Extortion is now a standard practice in Trump’s White House. First the Ukraine minerals “deal”. Now Trump’s unprecedented threat to misuse the power of the state against a private law firm to secure $40 million in free legal services (because billionaires can’t afford to pay…)

The UK’s press’ coverage of Starmer’s Trump meeting is prematurely celebratory: ➡️Tariffs haven’t been avoided—Trump’s dangling them if we don’t sign a trade deal which could have wildly unreasonable demands from 🇺🇸 on tech/ag/the NHS ➡️No US contribution to the Ukraine security guarantee #r4today

Trump vows to slap 25% tariffs on EU and claims bloc was ‘formed to screw US’ That’s staggeringly wrong & 100% untethered from any knowledge of European history. Trump’s switched allegiance the brutal dictator Putin & is attacking all 🇺🇸’s democratic allies. What a disgrace…

Trump refuses a security guarantee for Ukraine, so why the hell should 🇺🇸 get 🇺🇦’s minerals?! The US has provided less aid to 🇺🇦 than Europe. Almost 70% of 🇺🇸 aid to 🇺🇦 is spent in the US, supporting 🇺🇸 jobs & tax revenues. If Europe has to provide security it should get the minerals, not America!

I wanted—and actively planned—to buy a Tesla, but thanks to Elon Musk’s far right antics in America and Europe I’ve changed my mind. I’d now sooner poke my eyes out than give my money to Musk’s Tesla… #r4today

This news story is wild: the UN just passed a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and America OPPOSED THE RESOLUTION!!! How could you not condemn this illegal invasion?!?! Trump’s government is now fully on Putin’s side… 😱😱😱 #TrumpIsARussianAsset

France are misfiring in a way I’ve not seen for years, but it’s just a question of time before they run away with this game. Even making all these handling errors they are WAY more threatening in attack than England! #ENGFRA #ENGvFRA #6Nations

Shadow Minister Chris Philp on #r4today says immigrants can only stay in 🇬🇧 if they make a certain amount of money. What about people who work lower paid jobs in key sectors that struggle to find workers, like agriculture and hospitality? Seems like an anti-business decision…

I feel bad for Mexico that Trump is waging a trade war against them—many US businesses moved their production from China to Mexico as a result of Trump’s tariffs on China in his first term. US businesses can’t plan & invest without being undermined by Trump… #r4today

Listening on #r4today to reports of Trump confirming that he will wage a trade war against the EU because “they’re not taking our cars.” What an idiotic point! The European Commission doesn’t decide how many 🇺🇸 cars to import—consumers do, so just make better cars! #tariffwar

Trump saying he might not impose #tariffs on 🇬🇧 because “Keir Starmer has been nice” highlights just how this new global trade war is driven by the arbitrary, capricious whims of a geriatric man rather than evidence-based policy. He’s harsher on his allies than he ever was on Putin! #r4today

England haven’t looked threatening in the 2nd half—they have two major problems that are stopping them get into their stride: discipline (conceding way too many penalties) and the scrum (let’s see if the replacements change that dynamic). #IREvENG #6Nations

Such a disappointing drop in Scotland’s first half intensity/discipline after a great first 15 mins! The scrum’s a mess, & there’s way too much unimaginative channel 1 attack rather than using their amazing back line. 🇫🇷, 🇮🇪 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 will destroy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 if they play like this! #SCOITA #6Nations

Great first 15 minutes for #Scotland in this #SCOITA #6Nations contest, but as so often happens they have really dropped their pace, intensity and accuracy in the following 12 minutes. They will never win contests until they can be more consistent over 80 minutes… #SCOvITA

How long will it take for Fox News viewers to realise that it’s a systemically toxic work environment where a culture of sexism and sexual harassment and assault have prevailed for decades, right up to the most senior level? In that they couldn’t be more aligned with the GOP…

To say that Mark Zuckerberg is a craven simp who lacks any integrity or values beyond personal wealth maximisation would be the understatement of the century. What an absolutely contemptible human being… Meta terminates its DEI programs days before Trump inauguration #Facebook #Instagram

Merry Christmas to you all – I hope you have a wonderful day and holiday period surrounded by the people you love!

What a grim headline of yet more war crimes to wake up to on Christmas Day – Putin’s Russia really is an evil empire. Never trust any politician who tells you that the West is at fault for provoking Russia’s invasion or that Putin should get away with his war of aggression…

This is Israel’s Gaza war encapsulated in one headline—mass civilian deaths, many children killed, families decimated, everyone is a legitimate target per the IDF. There’s zero risk of the 10/7 attacks reoccurring so this is no longer self-defence, yet Netanyahu keeps genociding…

Once again, #FIFA reveal themselves to be a venal, corrupt organisation that does not care about the fans or integrity of football/soccer… Saudi Arabia confirmed as 2034 World Cup host despite human rights concerns #WorldCup #2034WorldCup www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Hi @alexhh.bsky.social, would it be possible to exchange DMs? I have a diplomacy question which I’d love to ask you which you may (or may not!) wish to engage with on this platform. Would love your insights! Thx in advance, D.

This John Harris quote in the Guardian is the best articulation of why Labour are failing & will lose the next general election: “Farage and Trump are winning because they understand the politics of emotion, while Labour is lost in numbers and statistics” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Listening to #r4today’s coverage of Russia’s massive missile attacks on Ukraine’s power generation and grid, it’s shocking that there’s no mention of the fact that this is illegal under international law! Why present war crimes as a normal war development?!

"we hate public spending except when it benefits us personally"

I get the pushback to Bluesky in that it further bifurcates our media ecosystem. But at this point, Twitter’s content moderation is so nonexistent and its verified users so extreme that the choice becomes either move away from Twitter or be subjected to straight up 4chan nazi bile on a daily basis.

I’ve never tweeted (blueskied?) about a film before, but I just watched #RebelRidge, one of the best films of its kind I’ve seen! Aaron Pierre’s leading performance—simmering-yet-controlled fury—is masterful. Saulnier’s directing delivers huge dramatic tension & avoids many stereotypes.

Well this process of finding and following on Bluesky the people you already follow on Twitter is a laborious pain in the neck isn’t it?!

I’m new to Bluesky, and am so looking forward to not having Elon Musk constantly forcing his crazy lie-ridden tweets into my feed! I hope Bluesky takes off, achieves critical mass and doesn’t turn into an X-like cesspit…

The England v Springboks game was equally entertaining & frustrating. Some fantastic passages of play from England against an ill-disciplined RSA, but the scrum, restarts, box kicking & defence were all creaky & sometimes disastrous! Borthwick’s not up to the job… #ENGvRSA #AutumnNationsSeries
