tidbit: one of my favorite church terms is "Holy Unmercenary," meaning someone who refuses money for doing good deals. It's good to be unmercenary.

Incisive 🏺thread - bone stored in a museum for decades shows greater DNA degradation and abundance of potentially deleterious bacteria than bone that had been left in the ground from the same site, suggesting museum storage had a detrimental effect on biomolecular preservation.

@visithmml.bsky.social is such an extraordinary place. For decades, they've been doing The Work of manuscript imaging & preservation, first on microfilm, now digitally. Manuscripts remain in their home institution where they are curated and cared for among their community of origin, as it should be.

A Life magazine feature and map on the student sit-in movement, September 19, 1960.

I gave a career talk to about 50 students at mount holyoke on tues. student wrote a long email to the organizer arguing that she should be taken off the wait list- she'd read my work in class and she wanted to hear from me. the org was moved and checked, only to find about 30 other kids waitlisted.

The pressure is on, but I will rise to it! 😄

I found in the LoC's Eames papers (Box 56, Folder 7) a 1980 proposal for an IBM Heritage & History Exhibition in Endicott, NY (the co's birthplace), featuring all these great little furniture + technology assemblages. Turns out the collection was removed last Jan 😥 www.wicz.com/story/503113...

Ctr for Bklyn History, 3/12: Jannah + Kiyanna Handy share items from their private collection; Natiba Guy-Clement shares items from CBH's clxn + Dominique Jean-Louis moderates a discussion on "the intersections btw institutional + private collecting [and] how we all curate our own spaces..."

Little pop up display on printing William Still’s “Underground Rail Road” made me appreciate all the public school teachers and their bulletin board skills.

Historians of manuscript digitisation will note that these manuscripts were originally digitised in 2015 through a commercial agreement with Brill. Presumably after 10 years the exclusive rights have now expired.

I have read through my share of issues, and I have to say, transcribing The Brownies' Book is not only a service, but a real pleasure!

Libraries as they try and embrace gen AI

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern. #upcycling

I often think about the college professors who saw through my extreme disfunction and coddled my creativity and human weirdness- where/would I be without them

I have this history book called "Victorian Marionette Theatre." There is an anecdote: "When Holden's company visited Istanbul in 1882, an Armenian photographer fell in love with their Cinderella and stole her." Some real repeating/rhyming stuff
