Jean Baudrillard died on this day 18 years ago. “Everywhere one seeks to produce meaning, to make the world signify, to render it visible. We are not, however, in danger of lacking meaning; quite the contrary, we are gorged with meaning and it is killing us.”

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

There's a certain toxic positivity about glasto that attempts to close down any critical thought about the institution. It's very obvious that the festival now caters - and has for some time - to a particular section of society able to afford the ticket, frequently reflected in the lineup.

It's world book day. Here's some of the current stack!

Starting to dawn on me that I have about three weeks left of my current uni contract, after which, I'll have a bit of availability for freelance stuff. I write, edit, teach, and speak about modern and contemporary art & culture. Here's my website with more detailed info: mikepinnington.cargo.site

Two days of tutorials over teams is not ideal. My head's done in.

I’m off to London for the Edward Stanford Travel Book Awards. Wild Twin wandering… Good luck to everyone who’s up for an award! @littletollerbooks.bsky.social

We got rejected for Arts Council funding again, but at least they're being honest about the fact they have no money. If you wanna buy our books, please do: www.brokensleepbooks.com/books

At Tate Liverpool last night in conversation with the brilliant Maria Fusco. Happy to report that this pic is the only evidence of her essay collection, Who does not envy with us is against us, from @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social, was ever in the building - it went like hot cakes!

Pretty telling that a search for the pictures generation artists has Google predicting your search is instead going to be for ai generated pictures...

Birthday money well (and truly) spent. Yes, I'm lucky enough at my advanced age to still have been given money in my cards this year! I tried to spend it wisely. Pew pew!

New podcast episode! First of two parts, we speak to the organisers of the Working-Class Literature Festival in Florence, held at the former GKN factory, which workers took over after they were laid off in 2021. Support us, and listen here: patreon.com/posts/wcl10-...

Today, I don't mind telling you, felt like a lot.

V tired after a couple of weekends spent away for exhibitions in Llandudno and London. Back home this week, with a new TDN culture diary, my pick of this week’s arts, design, film and music across Liverpool and beyond: www.thedoublenegative.co.uk/2025/02/cult...

I'm speaking to a group of artists tomorrow about text and communicating their work; specifically, via their artist statements. For those interested in this kind of thing, what's your hot tip for statement writing? And do any famously good - or bad - ones spring to mind? 👍✍️🎨🖌️thx!

NEW//I review Tate Liverpool exhibition, The Plant That Stowed Away, which takes as its departure point the docks on which the building stands: www.thedoublenegative.co.uk/2025/02/the-...

Back from a few days in London. Saw some great work - in excellent exhibitions @ The Photographers' Gallery; a small grouping at Fitzrovia Chapel; and the fascinating Swedenborg House >>>

Early start. On the way to London to catch some exhibitions, including the Hereafter at Swedenborg Society. Any off the beaten track (ie, not Tate Modern) recommendations welcome! 🎨🖌️ www.swedenborg.org.uk/events/simon...

Been writing about the new Tate Liverpool collection display, The Plant That Stowed Away, today. A show full of signs and symbols - of colonialism, post-industrial decline and more - the city and its history is the departure point. Words on The Double Negative soon >>> ✍️ #artwriting #criticism

Huh. Are there no books on JLG's Alphaville? There's an e-book by Chris Drake, but nothing else that I can see #film #writing #alphaville

Always forget Scout Niblett covered no scrubs. Not the weirdest cover ever, but still, it's probably in the vicinity.

Isn't it time someone had another crack at adapting EE Doc Smith's Lensman? I had the anime of it on video (!) in my teens and feel like there's a great screen sci-fi waiting to be discovered there. archive.org/details/e-e-...

It's Sunday. I'm reading and marking student essays. Now the good news: some v interesting topics addressed and thinking to match💥

Went to see the new exhibitions at Open Eye Gallery yesterday For Your Pleasure and Rave On: chronicling the legacy of rave culture in Liverpool. A pair of images took me back, via a portrait of Pulp and some club night flyers, to the formative days of spending the weekend dancing. ▶️

Photography feature in this weekend's guardian mag on pictures that changed the way we see the body. Among some good work, and I know you can't include everyone, it was pretty strange not to find Francesca Woodman, Zanele Muholi, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman... 📷
