There are many tragedies right now, really, there always are … but this is one of them.

“She had travelled multiple times back and forth to Ireland to see family over the years and never had a problem, until now, and obviously what is different now is the current political climate here, and the administration.”

Irish woman living legally in US for decades detained after visiting her father in Ireland – The Irish Times

“Americans are required to give lots of sensitive data to the government ... . They have done so based on faith that the government will protect that data, and confidence that only the people who are authorized and absolutely need the information to deliver the services will have access.”

After an especially ear-splitting week of tantrums from Nancy Mace, Pete Hegseth, and Stephen Miller, I explore the question: Why does MAGA love adults throwing childish fits? It's connected to the Mar-a-Lago face and Trump's love of bad music. www.salon.com/2025/04/28/m...

"A new dataset, visualized as maps, reveals the extent to which African workers are indirectly employed in the tech sector, doing content moderation, customer service, and data annotation for AI models, among other jobs." restofworld.org/2025/big-tec...

when i say that there was a venture capitalist conspiracy against american democracy i cannot express how literal i am being

"The idea of granting rights to a future sentient robot legitimizes a kind of techno-optimist thinking which, much like the current fad of commercial space travel, actually undermines rather than promotes sustainability" firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...

The first week of the Trump Musk Payments Crisis I listed 7 incomprehensibly dire things that could be done with control of the Bureau of Fiscal Service and full control of its data www.crisesnotes.com/day-six-of-t...

Novavax has been around for several years , it’s got an excellent safety/effectiveness profile, and it seems to cause fewer side effects, notably in many people with chronic conditions who have extreme responses to the mRNA vax. It’s also the only alternative for anyone allergic to mRNAs.

This doesn't bode well for the US having covid booster shots this fall, if the FDA is going to essentially require large trials for booster shots. They are clearly going to try and compromise every vaccine they can either through bureaucracy or misinformation. Sad! www.statnews.com/2025/04/27/f...

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed all of the staff that had distributed $1.7B annually in Social Services Block Grant funds, which many states had depended on for their child welfare, foster care and adoption systems.

same thing - bought a new car last year because I knew the Trump administration would blow things up, all new computers for the family earlier this year, new phone now to hunker down and plant potatoes..

Biden, 52%: “low end approval” Trump, 39%: proceeding “as expected”

90% of "Oh, there's a pro-natalist movement!" stories in past year have been about this same creepy couple. If this were a real trend—like current nationwide anti-Trump protest wave—you'd have more than *one couple* to keep writing about. Looking at you, NPR: www.npr.org/2025/04/25/n...

Buy books. But not from Amazon. Buy them from Bookshop.org, the independent site. This move by Amazon is shameful. Here is a link to my book on Bookshop.org. bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

I just wanna say that these are the kinds of questions and pushback that we have been asking for. The answers are terrible, but the interviewer is doing their job.

URGENT: This is not a crime A judge has the authority in her courthouse to excuse a defendant for God's sake Trump tried this in 1st term & he was thrown out of court 👉 www.courtlistener.com/docket/14997... PS the violation here was Patel's tweet & that's why he deleted. I'll be filing complaint

NYT: One estimate finds that DOGE’s “firings, re-hirings, lost productivity and paid leave of thousands of workers” will actually COST taxpayers “upward of $135 billion this fiscal year.” @nytimes.com 🤡 www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...

so, arresting judges should be more than enough reason for complete obstruction at in the house and senate. complete obstruction. anything you can do. interrupt proceedings, deny consent, holds on nominations. everything.

The reason why older generations burnt the shit out of their meat and boiled the shit out of their vegetables, was your kid died if you didn't. Medium rare steaks and roasted Brussels sprouts are a side effect of an intact food safety infrastructure

One of the happiest updates I’ve written since I started following this story. 12 students back in status and maybe more to come. Across the country, students are saying their SEVIS is back. www.dailycal.org/news/campus/...

LLMs are nothing more than models of the distribution of the word forms in their training data, with weights modified by post-training to produce somewhat different distributions. Unless your use case requires a model of a distribution of word forms in text, indeed, they suck and aren't useful.

People are being too hard on Donald Trump for crying out “Vladimir, stop!” Anybody can forget their safe word.

I'm getting quite sick of all the publicity that pronatalism is garnering, but I sure do appreciate @karenguzzo.bsky.social's truth telling in these articles. www.npr.org/2025/04/25/n...

As we leave you tonight, we are energized to see pushback working. We will remain vigilant. The power of the people is stronger than the people in power.

The federal health department is *not* creating a new registry of Americans with autism, @rosebroderick.bsky.social reports. But HHS will pour $50M into RFK Jr.'s autism studies. This is the latest walk-back of claims related to the effort. www.statnews.com/2025/04/24/n...

Trump has ordered the US government to move forward with plans to mine the ocean floor an area nearly every other country considers off-limits to industrial exploitation. His executive order sidesteps a decades-old international treaty ratified by every major coastal nation except the United States.

This is Tuna. You have once again taken him to the vet instead of the park. Fool him once, shame on you. Fool him twice, even more shame on you. 13/10 (IG: tunathekahuna)

my endorsement for any democratic presidential candidate who promises to send the entire DOGE team to prison

Honestly, I don’t want to see any more of these approval ratings even if he is the lowest of all time because all it does is trigger me into a confused rage as to how 40+% of this country still approves of this monster.

An antibiotic that's used to treat pneumonia has shown promise against Lyme disease at a dose 100 times lower than the standard antibiotic therapy - and it doesn't seem to harm the gut microbiome. Read @newscientist.com. www.newscientist.com/article/2477...

On the back of an old bookmark featuring Curious George, I found a vaguely useful explanation of the logic behind the Dewey Decimal system - had no idea that it was so … Hegelian?

1/ 🔒 Imagine a private company embedded in gov systems—processing and analyzing your health records, immigration status, and social media use. That’s Palantir, co-founded by Peter Thiel, who once said, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.” Yikes. Let’s discuss 🧵

Walz: "This is how government is supposed to work. It's not supposed to be one old man in the Oval Office sending out middle of the night tweets that shock markets into free fall. It's not supposed to be a bunch of 20 somethings unelected and firing everyone. It's not supposed to be chaos."
