Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs. It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

#ICYMI: We previously reported on Illinois’ “no-schoolers,” children pulled from public school who receive almost no education in homeschool. One 9-year-old told authorities he was beaten and denied food once his parents decided to be his teachers.

I kind of want the National Weather Service to stop issuing daily forecasts *now,* at the first big wave of cuts, instead of cobbling together a doomed, faulty, jalopy service, that will be easier to cut later. Lots of systems depend on those forecasts. They need to feel what cuts mean.

The thing that everyone thinks is nuts, but I absolutely think would work: a presentation that looked like an Apple keynote product launch, but for all the cool shit that the government makes for people. Cancer treatments, national parks, space discoveries, free tax filing, cool new airports.

If you’re a Dem elected and you’re not mentioning the massive cuts to cancer cure and social security funding in every public appearance you’re just not doing your job.

I think we have to agree that JD is such a sniveling little bitch.

YOUR FAVORITE WEATHER APP IS JUST A PRETTY DISPLAY OF NOAA DATA Ppl seem to think that "NOAA weather forecasts" means climate-, boat-, or "in addition to my app"-weather. But the weather forecasts *we all use* are made from the NOAA data *we all paid for* Make that part clear when you ⬇️

I spent the first part of my career studying the eight-hour movement of the 19th century and its radical roots in abolitionism and labor reform, via such thinkers as Ira Steward. We need to bring back this spirit to combat the efforts of our tech overlords to valorize exploitation and overwork.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13. I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.

I think about this headline all of the time.

If you’re connected with NOAA’s GLERL, or other Great Lakes teams affected by federal cuts + shifts, I’d love to hear from you. I’m a ProPublica reporter in Michigan with a longtime interest in water. Background: www.propublica.org/people/anna-... and www.annaclark.net Signal: annaleighclark.14

Meteorology is the lowest paying physical science discipline for PhDs because the statistics are so skewed by the large number that work in government. There really isn't a way for industry to absorb the ones fired now. We are mortally wounded and it's self-inflicted

Unbelievable news. Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers. New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Cycle breakers I love you and I’m proud of you 💙

Love this so much 💧

I got lazy using Amazon. No more. Buying directly from businesses, using Costco on-line, local small businesses and my wonderful public library for books. No more Kindle. It feels good and I will continue.

Bears repeating that social security is incredibly INCREDIBLY efficient to run. Its overhead costs are basically zero when you consider the size of the undertaking and the genuine benefits delivered. If anyone was interested in improving govt efficiency, the SSA would be their model not their target

Neutrality only ever helps the oppressor. #itsacoup #republicansarefascist

I almost bought a book on Amazon today, but then I went to eBay and got it slightly used for half the price. Boycotting Amazon is fun AND easy.

Biden's decision to remain in office after mild cognitive decline set in was one of history's greatest crimes. Here's why I have no problem with a senile narcissist and a coke-addicted foreigner rampaging their way through the Treasury.

Next year, the EU will require cars to have buttons & dials -- not just touchscreens -- to get a top safety rating. This is a great move. Drivers can fiddle with knobs & buttons without taking their eyes off the road, but they can't do that with touchscreens. (Even better: Tesla will hate this)

DOGE recommends cuts to the FAA. Hundreds of workers get fired, including those tasked with producing air traffic navigation maps. Now Starlink is reportedly in line to take over a $2 billion contract to upgrade the nation's air traffic control systems. See how this works?

On Monday, Iceland celebrates Bolludagur, or Bun Day. And you know what? There is nothing stopping you from doing so too. All you need is sweet buns filled with cream and to spank someone, preferably while they are still in bed.

I’m trying, I really am

You gonna arrest Rick Scott for his Medicaid fraud???? ...Or are you just talking bullshit? 🫠

my student: the ides of March are coming up me: my student: the Senate has the chance to do the funniest thing possible, that’s all I’m saying

This has to be one of the biggest opsec fails I've ever seen in my life. The actual director of the FBI driving around in the most conspicuous vehicle imaginable made even more so by it being neon red.

Of course they are. Hold them anyway. Do like they did in Colorado and bring a cardboard cutout. coloradosun.com/2020/11/25/c...

This is huge and monstrous. The nasal vaccines are our only hope of getting back to a world where you don't have to fear getting covid indoors. I would like to stop masking some day, and they're going to make it impossible.

Every single Democratic governor and attorney general needs to do this -- if only to make it clear to voters *right now* that the firings and funding freezes that are about to hurt their states badly are the work of Trump-Musk in Washington. Get ahead of this now, or get blamed for it later.

perhaps instead of 734 stories a week about Trump voters in diners we could try 734 stories about federal employees who love their country and were fired for no reason

New social media, 4 years later, and time for an update of my shark emoji review! Twitter manages to be the WORST, twice this time. @whysharksmatter.bsky.social Please help me spread this again 🦈🦈🦈

i will be using this information to dress up for fish, obvs

an opinion section that only has one person's opinion is just a blog

These stories amount to "the left was so annoying about pronouns or liberals made people feel so guilty about plastic straws they had no choice but to get on board with the second coming of the Third Reich and the destruction of the planet."

Brave to @jeffstein.bsky.social, WaPo's chief economics correspondent, for not wasting any time in stating what must be stated. Hopefully the first of many.

I’m somehow on a Heritage Foundation mailing list (😂) and they sent a survey to see what we think of DOGE. Who wants to offer some m-fing feedback?!? secured.heritage.org/the-heritage... Please share with a friend or a thousand :)

my superpower for predicting things? paying attention to what people with power say and do

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

No one had died of measles in America for ten years, until yesterday. That 2015 death in WA was preceded by a 12y period of no US deaths. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt... HHS Secretary RFK Jr. says it’s “not unusual.” apnews.com/article/meas... It is unusual. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...

Colorado's Rep Brittany Pettersen (D) flew cross-country with her one-month-old to vote against the GOP budget tonight. Dems ended up one vote short. Pettersen was part of an unsuccessful bipartisan push to allow new mothers to vote remotely. #copolitics

You first.
