Unless you don't agree with her ideologically, though. Then she's THEIR councillor and YOU don't have one.

“Common sense” is something people generally invoke when they don’t have evidence to support their arguments, or they don’t want to be bothered having to do any deep thinking about the issue.

Suburban councillor Nancy Hartling: "We can't be blaming congestion on bike lanes we haven't built yet" "You cite cost... nothing about a pause will lower the cost" "I see no facts here" #BikeHfx

9 month follow-up CT tonight actually. Biking again.

Thanks to everyone who made it to the #BikeHfx rally and who contacted their councillor and/or Mayor. It's medicine to see how supportive the community is.

If I had spoken at the #BikeHfx rally this morning I would have certainly made my wish known that anyone who has gone through a year like our family has gets to our hospitals easily and quickly. That only happens if you let people like me (willing and able to bike) get out of your way on the road.

If I had spoken at the #BikeHfx rally this morning I would have also talked about our many trips to the IWK last month after my wife's miscarriage and how we went by bike every time, during a staff and patient parking crisis, making sure not to add to the burden on the health system.

If I had spoken at the #BikeHfx rally this morning I would have talked about when I had cancer last year and biked to all of my appts except 2 (they don't let you leave by bike post-surgery, it seems). Thereby freeing up parking for people who need it (like I did, after surgery).

I was at the #BikeHfx rally this morning and the best part was watching dozens of people bike by who just had to get somewhere. There are WAY more people biking than could ever fit in Parade Square.

I was at the #BikeHfx rally this morning and all you need to make the point that bikes don't cause congestion is to watch hundreds of cyclists file out of there quickly and efficiently, and compare it to what happens after a Mooseheads game or a concert.

This one is particularly timely. #HaliSky

The great thing about the internet is there are always receipts. Here's Mayor Fillmore in 2021 talking about "inaccessibility, equity & the need to prioritize humans over car culture on our communities' streets" Via @counterpointapp.org from the other place. What changed? #ZeroVisionHFX #CarCult

Solidarity is the way. I don't really bike but if I don't fight for bike lanes, and the mayor gets his way, what happens when he wants to cut the next thing, and the next thing after that? If you give in on one fight you're signalling you will cave on any fight. Resistance means standing together.

During the budget process Fillmore argued that getting road maintence tenders out faster saves the city money and how he's arguing that pausing bike tenders will save the city money. One of these two arguments is a lie.

Quick math, but I think in 1 spring/summer month more bikes use Vernon St (a VERY cheap option to build, as a local street bikeway) than people who use the Yarmouth ferry in the whole season.

I remember all too well when Andy Fillmore (Halifax MP at the time) biked around the waterfront for this announcement in 2019. How the times have changed. www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/...

I wasn't expecting to drop everything to write this update today. Mayor Fillmore is putting forward a motion that could kill or drastically reduce the Regional Centre Bike Network. It's problematic, reckless, and lacking in evidence. My take here samaustin.ca/the-bike-net...

Hello, I have just read this book cover to cover in one sitting and cried more than once. I highly recommend it if you have any struggles at all with executive dysfunction, adhd, depression, or anxiety, it sees you, and it gives you a really welcome and caring hug, which it assures you, you deserve!

Thought I'd seen everything in Halifax traffic until I just saw a red SUV with Quebec plates hop up into the raised bike lane on South Park at Sackville (in front of the Public Gardens) for half a block.

Good morning Halifax! A new issue of the paper is out on newsstands now. This issue @joshrjhealey.bsky.social gives an update on the stadium: Halifax has one now! Also @landofsticks.bsky.social recaps last week's council meetings and looks into the cost of free parking. Grab it @ Atlantic News!

Quick reminder as a precautionary measure, if you’re a Nova Scotia Power customer to take some time today to change your password, and any accounts that share the password. So pretty much all of HaliSky and the province.

Poilievre rushed to safety after actual journalist question makes it past security

As a violence researcher I have a few comments for Scotian parents who think a student code of conduct will reduce violence in schools.

Since leaving the Coast, many people have wondered what I've been doing. The answer is that I'm launching an actual physical newspaper. To that end, I've launched a subscription drive in hopes of being able to pay freelancers so that the first issue on May 5 has more than just me writing in it.

Empathy, or the lack thereof

It's fun to watch an old crank turn himself in knots to make snow days a CRISIS while carefully avoiding using the words 'climate change'. saltwire.com/nova-scotia/...
