Apropos of everything, I keep a very frequently (these days) updated list of internships/jobs across the wx-climate enterprise here: wx.erau.edu/about/opport.... Open to anyone, not just our students. I will start including higher-level positions than I normally do (normally focus on entry-level).

China recruiting the world’s best talent instead of the US. You want to get your congressman’s attention? There is your bait.

Brightband is hiring two interns this year! Come join us in democratizing AI and weather!

We're seeking a motivated Machine Learning Scientist to join our research team at RWE AI Research Lab in Seattle/Bellevue area (Hard requirement of relocation). Ideal candidates will bring: -Strong foundation in Computer Science, AI, or Applied Mathematics

We won’t step up for you, you have to do it yourself, has to be one of the worst stances to take

I'm covering NOAA and the National Weather Service for @bloomberg.com. If you'd like to talk, please reach out. Call or text on the free Signal app: lgrosen.03 Email: lrosenthal21[at]bloomberg.net Submit a tip: www.bloomberg.com/tips/

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

😍

We have three new papers out leveraging #AI climate emulators to estimate the radiative response to sea surface temperatures. Bottom line: Yes! We are learning new science with these tools. arxiv.org/abs/2502.10893 doi.org/10.1029/2024... eartharxiv.org/repository/v...

No reason this can't happen everywhere

Shrinking the National Weather Service staff with no real plan as tornado, hurricane, and fire seasons approach unnecessarily puts public safety at risk

If you’re an NWS met who will find themselves unfairly and unjustly looking for work, first let me say it’s terrible and wrong. And I hope you end up back helping keep us all safer and informed again sooner than later. This too shall pass (I hope).

Laying off meteorologists at NWS, which was already dealing with staffing issues, is a threat to public safety heading into severe weather season. No doubt everyone will give their best, but this adds stress to workers at wfo’s. There’s so many bright young Mets in our field. I’m so sorry.

My heart goes out to so many of you that I know (and those I don’t). I just can’t fathom this

The Trump administration has directed agency heads to fire most trial period and probationary staff within two days, taking aim at many of the roughly 200,000 people hired by the federal government within the last two years www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

The n on these cases is still just a few for me, but amazed at how much better the AI NWP emulators appear to perform than even the high res CAM models when it comes to low level cold air in the Plains (showing here the 18z Wed RTMA with 30 hr fcsts from EC AIFS, GFS and NSSL WRF)

Swampy

"[The removal of public data has] real world consequences, leaving individuals, families, communities, and policymakers alike without access to secure, reliable federal data that they have paid for and expect to use."

The AMS joins over 230 organizations and 2,600 individuals in submitting the following letter to Congress, expressing concern and strong opposition to the selective removal of public data from federal websites: bit.ly/42RqXwR

happy International Day of [banned] and [banned] in Science [under review] from the US

But remember Accuweather doesn’t want NOAA to go away… they just want to brag they are better than them

Heads up that we have an open tenure-track position at OU in Meteorology/Aviation!

Let’s play ball!

Lots of over betters really hoping KC can tack on another TD here…

and the history of how university research is what it is: “A key feature of [Vannevar] Bush’s recommendation was that the Federal government should invest heavily in basic and applied research by capitalizing on the infrastructure already present in our universities. That was clearly a success”

“This isn’t a cost savings, it’s a cost transfer” - transferring to the state (aka taxpayers), to students via tuition increases, etc.

Very wet period coming up for the South with potential flooding. Convective rains at this time of year tend to be very efficient flash flood producers given the lack of active vegetation. CSU AI excessive rainfall forecasts highlighting large swaths of significant probabilities on multiple days.
