When you read that someone owns so many billions don't think of it as abstract numbers in a bank account. These billions are held in the form of assets, companies, land, rented out housing, etc.. As their wealth increases they own more of these and the rest of us therefore own less of them.

Farmers say their land is valued higher than the return they get for it compared to other assets. This is because the rich are buying farms to avoid inheritance tax. If farms were taxed as other assets the value would drop their return would therefore improve and they would pay less inheritance tax.
