Time to update this post. It looks like the bird site has totally lost coherence and I hope this place will help carry academic exchanges/good conversation.

Forthcoming in AER: Insights: "Discrimination in the Formation of Academic Networks: A Field Experiment on #EconTwitter" by Nicolás Ajzenman, Bruno Ferman, and Pedro C. Sant'Anna. www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

No consequences were applied when Israel first first missiles at Gazan hospitals, nor when the first hospital massacre was perpetrated, nor after for killing hundreds of medical workers. Now the same tactics are being deployed in the West Bank. Utterly amoral conduct.

I have been here for two months and this place looks like The NY Times of social media. Despite all criticism, Musk’s place is still my “to go”choice for academic news as well as info on Palestine. Weeding out misinformation is not hard on the bird site and I am ok to sometimes feel uncomfortable.

“A society that sanctifies indiscriminate death and killing loses its moral superiority and the justification for its existence. This is the second massive blow that Hamas is on the way to landing on us, and it is even more terrible than the first.” - Uri Misgav www.haaretz.com/opinion/2023...

Speak out, act up, and resist injustice. Especially those of us who can do so more safely than our friends & fellow humans. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/...

Read that twice

"The evidence shows that Israel has carried out its war in Gaza at a pace and level of devastation that likely exceeds any recent conflict, destroying more buildings, in far less time, than were destroyed during the Syrian regime’s battle for Aleppo 2013-2016" www.washingtonpost.com/investigatio...

New PCPSR poll of West Bank and Gaza: rising support for Hamas, further decline for PA (90% want Abu Mazen to resign), rising support for armed struggle in the WB, little support for PA or Arab role in Gaza, most blame Israel/US and not Hamas for the situation. pcpsr.org/en/node/961

Exclusive: Israel used U.S.-supplied white phosphorus munitions in an October attack in southern Lebanon that injured at least nine civilians in what a rights group says should be investigated as a war crime, according to a Washington Post analysis of shell fragments found in a small village.

He was a professor of comparative literature and creative writing. They killed him, his sister, and her four children.

This is indeed a widespread trend beyond the MENA scholars.

I will never forget or forgive this. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/a...

"Can you imagine the agony all Gazan children, mothers and fathers have right now? How many have already died without even sharing their dreams with the world. How many have lost their futures without having a fair chance to achieve them?"

Most of these people were already refugees. Now the so called evacuation orders cover all of Gaza.

Israel’s war on Gaza has been unending horrors and devastation, but it’s hard to get past the largely uncovered forced abandonment and death of five premature babies at Al-Nasr Hospital. HRW spared you the soul-searing pictures which were all over social media. www.hrw.org/news/2023/12...

Horrific. www.hrw.org/news/2023/12...

Israeli officials obtained Hamas’s 40-page battle plan for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack more than a year before it happened, documents, emails and interviews show. But Israeli military and intelligence officials dismissed the plan as aspirational, considering it too difficult for Hamas to carry out.

The US left’s reaction to Kissinger’s death is a useful reminder that we have generally been on the side of humanity, often in opposition to American foreign policy, at least since Vietnam up through today. It’s our progressive friends supporting Israel’s war crimes who’ve lost their moral bearings.

MSNBC cancels Mehdi Hasan show, per Semafor

Sorry to dwell, but I still cannot believe that an Ivy League university administration dissolved two student groups for holding a completely peaceful demonstration to protest their country’s complicity in what was, at that point, the massacre of >10,000 people in under 5 weeks.

“The targeted destruction of Gaza’s primary public library is a stark reminder that genocide is about more than just the premeditated mass extinguishing of human life; it’s also about the calculated & often vindictive destruction of a people’s culture, language, history & shared sites of community.”

In less than two months, more than twice as many women and children have been reported killed in Gaza than in Ukraine after two years of war. Estimated 14,000 civilian fatalities has exceeded estimates of civilians killed in Afghanistan, 2009-21. 70% of fatalities are women & kids.

“'The main alleged crime for these detentions is stone-throwing, which can carry a 20-year sentence in prison for Palestinian children'... Children in Israeli detention often suffer physical, psychological & sexual abuse, & some are deprived of food, water & sleep, according to Save the Children."

Free them all.

Heartbreaking stories of Afghan families being torn apart as Pakistan forcibly expels up to 1 million Afghans, many of whom were born in Pakistan and have spent their entire lives there. Cruel dilemma: hide in the shadows and hope to avoid getting caught, or go to Taliban Afghanistan?

Committee to Protect Journalists reports 48 journalists & press members killed in Gaza since 7 October, the deadliest month since data started being collected 30 years ago. By comparison, 42 were killed worldwide last year. An estimated 76 were killed during the entire Afghan War, 2001-21.

Half of all buildings in northern Gaza are damaged or destroyed, according to new satellite analysis estimates. That's about 43,000 buildings. Two weeks ago, it was one-third of all buildings estimated damaged or destroyed.

Israel is rounding up and arresting thousands throughout the occupied territories. Mosab Abu Toha, the acclaimed poet from Gaza, is just the latest example. This was filed Saturday by Ali Sawafta and Henriette Chacar on the situation in the West Bank:

Seriously, read that again.

The new global justice movement…

This is both shocking and totally unsurprising, but boy do I hate it so much "...among its objectives was to use phony information to attack and destroy the reputations of its targets and brand them as terrorists."

If someone is pretending to care only about anti-Semitism and does not care at all about Islamophobia, Palestine, denigration of human beings etc. they do not really care about anti-Semitism. All they are doing is a shameless PR.

All intensive care patients at al-Shifa Hospital have died, according to the facility’s director: ‘We are left with nothing, no power, no food, no water. With every passing minute, we are losing a life. Overnight we lost 22 persons.’

One out of every 200 people in Gaza have been killed by the Israeli army — and the bombing still hasn’t stopped. Let that sink in for a moment, then remember how Israeli authorities are trying to make Western publics believe they aren’t targeting civilians. This is a massacre.

This past weekend, Dr. Hammam Alloh—a nephrologist at Al-Shifa Hospital, who contributed a dispatch about conditions in Gaza two weeks ago—was killed in his home by an Israeli airstrike. Read his words here: jewishcurrents.org/we-have-lost-t…

Israel wants Gazans to move from where it killed 7,142 to the safer area where it killed 3,676 only

At Al-Shifa hospital Gaza: We currently have around 600 inpatients who need medical care. We have around 37 to 40 premature babies. We have around 17 other patients in the ICU. We have around 600 postoperative admitted patients which need medical care. We need a ceasefire.

It’s hard for me to process how people can see a genocide unfolding live, literally entire families and bloodlines being erased. Children being murdered. And not only ignore it, but then try to excuse it away by policing the language of people calling for the end of the massacre.

This is so fucking evil that I don’t even have the words

“There was greater openness to expressions of sympathy for Palestinians living under occupation,” said Nathan Thrall, author of “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama,” which published on Oct. 3. But as war broke out, a quarter of his appearances were canceled. www.washingtonpost.com/books/2023/1...
