At long last, I’m thrilled to announce that my new book, WITHOUT CONSENT: A Landmark Case and the Decades-Long Struggle To Make Spousal Rape a Crime, will be published on November 11, 2025 and is available for pre-order wherever books are sold! www.sarahweinman.com/book/without...

*Musk pushed for removal of FAA head that regulates one of his businesses *Planes crash *Musk says he will help FAA *FAA ends up purchasing products from another of Musk's businesses

Do you work on surface MRI such as HCP data? Our paper is finally out in Imaging Neuroscience, showing biases in surface fMRI. The revised ms has many new insights! TLDR: Vertices are much closer to each other in sulci, resulting in (fake) high spatial autocorrelation. (1/5)

How can a brain disease increase creativity? We derive a brain circuit from creative tasks demonstrating they share reduced activity in the right frontal pole. Then we show that brain lesions & neurodegeneration that increase creativity are connected to this location jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Does human creativity map to a specific brain circuit? Can damage to this brain circuit increase creativity? New paper by Julian Kutsche @isaiahneuro.bsky.social @braincircuits.bsky.social out today in JAMA Network says answer to both is YES. Paper is open access and great thread below:

I'm looking to see if the cuts & chaos at CDC and NIH have affected any clinical trials or research for drugs for the treatment of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or other serious diseases. If you know anything, please contact me at DavidCorn.99 at Signal. Or if you have any other good stories.

For the US to side with Russia and North Korea to oppose a UN resolution condemning the illegal invasion of Ukraine defies all common sense and adds insult to the countless injuries suffered by the brave Ukrainian people. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/24/p...

had a thought that if apple were to release a traditional ipod it would sell like hotcakes

Congratulations to my colleague Emily Austin on this tremendous news! Austin Wins New Public History of Philosophy Prize - Daily Nous. dailynous.com/2025/02/24/a...

This feels surreal. Governments around the world that are pro-peace, pro-human rights and pro-democracy now must set aside their differences and be united against war and dictatorship. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

The Revolution will be AI-icized

berthub.eu/articles/pos... "the legal basis for sharing personal data with American companies is dead since Donald Trump has neutered the special court that would make such transfers legal. ... anyone with any sense can see that America is no longer a reliable partner"

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

i think this is basically what has happened a big chunk of the american pundit class

❗❗❗ former leader of Reform UK in Wales has appeared in court accused of accepting bribes in exchange for making statements in the European Parliament that would benefit Russia, a court has heard www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This is not healthy.

“I’ll see you and raise you one.”

“Merz was firmer than most expected after the result. He said the absolute priority will be to achieve independence from the US. That is quite something from a transatlanticist conservative leader and the next chancellor in Germany.” @annettedittert.bsky.social Look behind the screeching headlines.

🇪🇺🇩🇪 "Europe may need its own military alliance instead of NATO. Germany can no longer rely on the protection of the "nuclear umbrella" of the American military," — Merz

Here’s the new Deputy Director of the FBI. 👇

Selecting another right-wing Fox personality and internet troll — Dan Bongino — as Deputy FBI Director means two things: Trump installs another loyalist who won’t say no to any immoral or unethical act. And our law enforcement agencies — and the public safety — are further degraded.

"Nothing to see here. Move along."

Information was shared illegally. A career employee at the Social Security Administration provided unauthorized access to data to Elon Musk’s staffers. This employee, Leland Dudek, a data analyst, was recently promoted to acting commissioner by Trump.

Since Trump has claimed Elon doesn’t run DOGE, we wanted to make sure you know who is running our government. This list has been updated with 15 names.

USAID informed employees via email that it is terminating 2,000 workers and placing thousands of foreign service officers and other direct hires worldwide on paid leave, effective tonight.

New — State Department employees have been instructed *not* to reply to OPM’s 5 bullet email, per an email I reviewed, saying leadership “will respond on behalf of the Department.”

“No employee is required to report outside their department chain of command” should have been the universal position of every agency since Jan 20 considering how it is, you know, the law.

Two stray thoughts on this 1. Is Musk *creating* a deep state opposition by this abusive shit? Such a great fashy footgun (see also, alienating the judiciary etc) 2. Is he even alienating fellow trumpers, as in the bit about Kash Patel declaring his own authority in response?

the way this incident was covered was ultimate vindication for "they want trump to win" theory. totally buried in the final weeks of the campaign despite indicating serious, serious health and mental problems for trump

It took ten years, but the NYT finally got there

I like that my mid-range financial decisions now include considerations like "will money be worth anything"

Just started using Libro.fm. It's an alternative to Audible that supports local bookstores. I encourage people to use it! My referral link, in case people want to sign up: www.libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm785561

I've written a free and accessible guide to Cephalopod Sentience with Alex Schnell, Piero Amodio and Peter Morse, stunningly illustrated by Roksolana Tkach. Please download and share! It's worth it for the illustrations alone! 🐙 thebrooksinstitute.org/sites/defaul...

“More than a quarter of the contracts listed by DOGE were actually already paid, the Journal found, saving no money. For instance, DOGE listed $168,000 in savings for terminating a contract with HHS for an Anthony Fauci museum exhibit. It had already been fully paid.” Beyond parody.

The AP knows what's at stake. They knew that supporting renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” would be a loyalty test and turn them into the Vichy press. "AP sues Trump administration officials after being blocked from presidential events" www.cnn.com/2025/02/21/m...

I reached out to a friend in Europe and asked his perspectives on what America is up to. "We're all looking on in dismay and bewilderment. Dismay at the reckless, utterly pointless damage that's being done, and bewilderment at how it's being allowed to happen." 1/2

“Some journalists at the Times and the Post do good and important work” and “The Times and the Post frequently make terrible editorial decisions with real negative consequences” are not mutually exclusive ideas. You can hold to both, and should, because they’re both true.

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.
