Another tragic school shooting… that wasn’t prevented by school hardening. Students determined to cause harm will know the blindspots.

What happens when students are given meaningful opportunities to contribute to the decisions that shape their school experience? Read Samantha Holquist, Dana Mitra, and Jerusha Conner’s new Child Trends blog to find out. www.childtrends.org/publications...

Flying across the country to go help my mom move to DC. The Cap One Lounge at DFW is always a highlight. #sandwichgeneration

Also adding to things just being awful… my husband traveled cross country to help my elderly mother move and now has COVID. Everything is a mess.

I had multiple colleagues today tell me they were numb. Between the HHS RIF today seeing some of our closest partners lose their jobs to waiting for the next show to drop for our own projects it’s just too much. We’re all in survival mode right now.

Jason Brown will always be my favorite skater. Always.

Okay. I needed tonight’s Women’s Figure Skating Worlds to improve my mood. Wow.

April is going to be the month of dystopian tv shows… both You and Handmaids Tale are coming out….

The official order is here. Read it all and compare it to the draft! www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

The Department of Education does not set curriculum. The Department of Education does not set curriculum. The Department of Education does not set curriculum.

Oh nine year old humor — she realized my name is essentially “the bruh” and this has resulted in endless giggles…. 🫠

I definitely just sat down and said to myself "at least tomorrow is Friday." Oh, wait, tomorrow is Wednesday. Wishful thinking?

Pi Day is one of my favorite traditions. Today I ate a slice of apple pie with my nine year old while she recited the first 15 digits of Pi. But that will never top the truly nerdy celebrations I’ve had with my colleagues @childtrends.bsky.social

The government shutdown is truly a rock and hard place, but I want to highlight that the threat of a shutdown (and particularly one where there’s no guarantee the government will pay back its bills) is particularly affecting the government workers and contractors that have already been hit hard.

Anyone who is using IES-facilitated data to criticize the Education Department today really needs to acknowledge that the entire research arm that has helped form the basis of their opinions about the federal role in schools has just been decimated, raising serious questions about progress tracking.

I’ve never been to #AEFP before but from all the posts here it seems like it’s the place to be this week. Worth it for me to head into DC for a bit this week?

McMahon: I'm so ignorant and ill-informed that I don't even know what IDEA stands for yet I definitely know which 1,800 Department of Education employees need to be immediately fired.

Dear all… we’re all devastated by the cuts at the Department of Education. Let’s show them the utmost respect by not confusing them with the Department of Energy (ED vs DOE). Thanks.

As Trump tries to dismantle the Department of Education, remember that his plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% would give the 100 largest corporations a tax cut larger than the entire department's K-12 budget. Really think about how twisted this all is.

How much federal funding are Donald Trump and Elon Musk threatening to take away from your local public schools? A great tool to find out the answer and use it in your advocacy.

Thinking about all of my former colleagues @usedgov.bsky.social tonight. How massively heartbreaking.

Pi (pie) day was always one of the biggest nerdy events at @childtrends.bsky.social when we were in person together. This year, the sadness of us not being together is met with also realizing we had to do our first layoff ever last week. Help us keep our mission alive: www.childtrends.org/donate

Child Trends' staff is 89% women. Supporting women and science is more important now than ever. www.childtrends.org/donate

If it happens, reversing course on conversion therapy will undoubtedly cause LGBTQ youth suicides to increase. One rigorous analysis found an increase of 17 percentage points, a 55% increase, in transgender youth attempting suicide doi.org/10.1016/j.jh... This is literally a life & death matter.

I completely forgot the clocks changed today and was impressed that I slept to 9:30 (and my 9 year old let me). Nope. Just the clocks.

I'm getting the feeling that my current research on difference-in-differences with non-binary treatments has no shot at NSF funding.

Last week I had to do one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my career and layoff some incredible colleagues. What is happening to research is just incomprehensible right now.

Folks should (and will) sue to block this, and they will prevail. It's a ridiculous distraction that will do nothing--zero--to help children. In the meantime, those of us who actually care are continuing to do the work.

The CRDC is such a crucial data collection to demonstrate where disparities in our system exist. One of our most cited publications is this one documenting changes in suspensions and expulsions by race and disability: www.childtrends.org/publications...
