This is extremely sad news. www.washingtonpost.com/entertainmen...

They were careless people, Donald and Elon - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

This would be more convincing if we hadn't spent the last four years being told that Democrats in the majority were hamstrung ban an intransigent Republican minority.

Of the work I've done @cendemtech.bsky.social, I'm most proud of our efforts to combat the nonconsensual disclosure of intimate images. That's why I'm so disappointed the TAKE IT DOWN Act passed the Senate today. cdt.org/insights/cdt...

Nice list from @froomkin.bsky.social of actionable things you can do to fight the Trump agenda. I wish there was some big new idea here to solve everything, but that's not going to happen. Protecting democracy requires millions of small actions. www.headsupnews.org/p/what-you-c...

Does anyone know about the #50501 protest taking place in DC tomorrow? I see some info here but I know nothing about this group: events.pol-rev.com/events/059ad...

If you’re feeling frustrated and powerless with the state of the world, a thing that could actually make a difference would be to unionize your workplace.

Trump is trying to shut down the independent agency that could blow the whistle on his most dangerous abuses of power. Take a moment to think about what that means about his plans. cdt.org/insights/pre...

Just to make sure I've got this right: tech companies are putting TikTok back online based on a promise from Trump that he definitely won't enforce billions of dollars of legal liability unambiguously laid out in federal law? A promise he could, at the slightest provocation, take back?

It would actually be really funny if they scheduled this decision day and then *didn't* issue their TikTok ruling.

Thanks to Candy Crush, your personal location data might be public now. www.theverge.com/2025/1/13/24...

On my way into work today I saw a man on the sidewalk skinning a rat with a pair of office scissors. It's good to have a hobby, I guess.

DC has an e-bike rebate program, but it would be great to see the VA/MD suburbs join in. Biking into the District can and should be a lot more fun than sitting in traffic. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Without getting dragged into a certain President-elect's neocolonial fantasies, this is a good opportunity to remind you all that Jane Smiley's "The Greenlanders" is a brilliant, tragically underappreciated novel that more people should read. bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Forget this. Drink black tea with some milk because it is good for your soul.

This is worth a read. It makes me more grateful than ever for groups like @wstatescenter.bsky.social and the Bridging Divides Initiative at Princeton who are doing important, thoughtful work confronting political violence.

Investing (hundreds of?) millions in a football stadium in this location is a Hall of Fame bad idea.

Last week alone the DC Council passed bills on covenanted roads and alleys, youth mentorship programs, pets in public housing, litter collection, vehicle-for-hire regs, sound mitigation, probate processes and fraudulent license plates. Congress is gonna review each bill? Give me a break.

I don't agree with everything here, but I too was surprised by the boiling anger this shooting uncovered (even as I feel it myself! Ask me!) That politicians have been incapable of responding to the core challenge here seems like a very frightening system failure. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/06/o...

As someone who has occasionally said things like "You *never* help with the dishes!" while fighting with my husband, I can confirm this is true.

Thought experiment: The President of the US attempts a similar move. What do you do? Not the Democrats. Not elected leaders. Not even voters. Not "they". What do *you* do that day? apnews.com/article/sout...

New Surveillance Policy Starter Pack just dropped 🤖 go.bsky.app/KXQKwoX

Between Labyrinth Games & Puzzles and Hill’s Kitchen, I can usually knock out half my list. Solid State Books takes care of the rest.

Ooh. Lots of good follows here.

Mostly for my own benefit, I'm trying to gather up some of the folks I used to follow in the old place who tweeted about safe streets, housing, etc in DC, so I made a starter pack. Who needs to be added here?? go.bsky.app/FiJ3Q5r

Why is no one making starter packs of people who aren't experts on anything but are just kinda chilling out?

Evan is a brave woman and as usual she is right. If the future of the internet is to be the bright one we all want, it must be open and available to everyone. That should be table stakes for any conversation.

Does anyone know who's thinking about / leading activism to protect DC's home rule? #DCPolitics #HandsOffDC

Important follow for fans of old books, DC culture and Percival Everett.

I keep returning to this protest in the NZ parliament, and I think it's a clue to (part of) what we'll need in the US: action that's *deeply* connected to culture. How do we communicate that policies aren't just offensive to what we believe but to who we are? www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTQF...

Big follow for tech policy people -->

Taking all the money I saved by cancelling my subscription to the Washington Post and sending it to InfoWars. But in a good way?

This @chrislhayes.bsky.social conversation with the wise and wonderful Anna Galland should be required listening for everyone contemplating what their role will be in fighting for inclusive democracy over the next four years. www.msnbc.com/msnbc-podcas...

Some of you are being super overdramatic about what's going to happen under a second Trump Administration. The problem is that I can't figure out who...

@darthbluesky.bsky.social I shared a couple super-easy ideas about how folks can tighten up their digital security in case, oh, I dunno, a lawless autocrat seizes power in their country.
