I will never forget the photo of Zelenskyy’s face after he saw Russia’s war crimes in Bucha in 2022. He seemed to age years in an afternoon. Watching him constantly cross the world asking for aid that should have been thrown at him is one of the deepest shames of our age.

If the guy who arguably has the most to lose from telling Trump to get fucked can manage it, then everyone else should too.

No, the meeting did not go badly for Ukraine. It exposed in the most undeniable, unequivocal way possible the pro-Putin commitments of the president and vice president. That was information Americans and allies needed to have clear before them.

Zelensky is a wartime leader watching his people suffer and die under Russian attacks every day. To be lectured and lied to by Trump and Vance, as they defend the war criminal dictator committing these atrocities, is unimaginable agony. An everlasting shame for America.

This was a disgusting display by the soft, uninformed VP Vance trying to school Zelensky, the man who has led his country through the most surprisingly resilient and effective fight for sovereignty against a global superpower. Every negative stereotype about America is confirmed in this exchange.

In the Oval Office today, two of the smallest men in the world met one of the biggest, and they realised which was which. Slava Ukraini.

For those wondering why Trump is spouting Putin's talking points regarding Ukraine/Zelensky: 1) Trump is utterly in awe/thrall of Putin & has been for years 2) He's a fascist and feels an affinity with dictators & 'strong men' 3) He thinks Zelensky was mean to him & he has no emotional control

Apropos of nothing in particular (*cough* Charles III inviting Trump over for tea *cough*) this seems like as good a time as any to mention that Edward VIII was a Nazi sympathiser. www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6635225

"Cambridge’s efforts to undermine its students’ civil liberties – by seeking an injunction to effectively ban expressions of Palestine solidarity both on and off campus until 2030 – represented the broadest restriction on university protests to date" www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Democracy dies in deference

Apologies to my dissertation students: I was just about to read your work and then a cat sat on me 🤷‍♀️ #AcademicSky

what in the living, breathing fuckery is that POSE?! 😂🤦‍♀️

Ah, George "pain-along-the-way" Boyne. What a legacy.

There is no student experience without staff (academic & professional services)

My colleages and I are organising a panel at the RGS this summer - please share! CfP - Relentless injustice: trauma, exhaustion and researching zombie problems (or banging your head against a wall) We invite papers that consider the challenges, traumas & exhaustion of conducting research... (1/2)

Starting my day with a ghost story and am absolutely delighted to see @luciejones83.bsky.social on Uncanny! #AcademicSky

This is true. A pal of mine who is a policeman went to a Scottish island recently to investigate a missing person and when the locals found out he was a Christian they stuck him in a giant human-shaped willow branch construction and burned him alive.

Book now for our @britsoci.bsky.social event supporting early career academics in coping with the problems of UKHE and finding our own strategic path through the mess! Great sociologists involved, free event, bursaries available. www.britsoc.co.uk/events/key-b...

Something wildly unpleasant about the successful marketing of things to the British middle class as "oooh, this is kinda like an illegal drug", while that same class refuses point blank to legalise a drug trade that exploits/incarcerates huge numbers of poorer and racialised people

ICE went to the home of a 61-year-old man with poor health and after his family informed ICE agents that they needed a warrant signed by a judge, dozens of ICE agents instead showed up in an armored vehicle with a battering ram and flash grenades and took him by force.

Someone just said that colonization is visibly happening in Canada for the first time (re. USA's tariffs, sovereign threats, etc), and I'm just here waving hands Indigenously.

I love this, simply as a maxim for personal relations. Truly, the 'when people show you who they are, believe them' has always struck me as incurious and stubbornly pathologising.

Read the whole of this thread. Not only is it chilling with respect to how the Trump administration thinks about the politics of the left, feminism, anti-racism, & disability, but also the implicit inclusion of social sciences and the humanities with these so-called 'woke' ideologies. #AcademicSky

The world's richest man - perhaps the richest man who has ever lived - gloating about shutting down aid for the world's poorest people. All while posing as the champion of the common man. The great lie of populism in its most naked and morally putrid form.

What’s his beef against USAID in particu….oh. Wow.

This Fiona Apple narrated explainer PSA on how to film (and release footage from, not livestream) ICE arrests is exactly what we need from people with production skills right now and is worth about 3 million celebrity “imagine” covers in terms of survival utility

All and any early career sociologists on #AcademicSky see our free @bsaecr.bsky.social event - at Newcastle, we can offer some bursaries for travel etc so please do get in touch.

My publishers are now seven (!) months overdue paying me. I've been kindly asked by a few readers how they can help. Best of all is a paid subscription to my Substack: tomcox.substack.com If you cannot afford that, I've set up this link on my site: tom-cox.com/support-toms... Thank you! Tom

As Oxford University puts out an official statement saying they deserve all the extra £ and more I'll just note that: (1) Rachel Reeves said no new money for all other UK Universities, leading to massive redundancy across the sector. (2) The VC of Oxford University now receives over £1M annually.

Absolutely in the bin with this lot. There is more to UKHE than Oxford, Cambridge, or the Russel Group - and these institutions are what need investment, not two universities who are already rich as Croesus. #AcademicSky #UKHE

Finally got round to doing this, after having not been on the hellsite for, really, a few years. #X #Twitter #deactivated
