It's often claimed Pedunculate Oaks cannot regenerate within forests, and need open ground (savanna/wood pasture), but here 2 km deep in the #Białowieża forest there's oaks at every stage of maturity, from seed/saplings, to juveniles, and mature forest giants 35-40 m tall, in continuous forest.

REVEALED: only 5% of Forestry Commission grants for woodland creation have been spent on the natural regeneration of trees, while the remaining 95% is spent on tree planting. The government needs to change the rules. My FOI request & comment in the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Mark Carney is asked how the lessons of Brexit apply to Trump's tariff policy. "When you break off or substantially rupture trade relations with major trading partners... you end up with slower growth, higher inflation, higher interest rates, volatility, a lower currency, a weaker economy." ~AA

Delighted to hear that the Woodland Trust are buying Buckland Wood - a glorious temperate rainforest on the River Dart, sadly damaged by plantation forestry Here's some pics I took when I visited last year with the previous owners & WT Help them restore it: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/support-us/g...

An EU-UK Youth Mobility Scheme is very popular with UK voters. It would begin to restore opportunities for young UK citizens lost due to Brexit, and would be a real economic gain for the UK. As part of UK-EU reset it's a clear win-win for both sides. www.bestforbritain.org/feb_2025_mrp...

A powerful discussion at the #Cambridge Literary Festival yesterday with @tonyjuniper.bsky.social & @mikebernerslee.bsky.social on the poly crisis, asteroid scale damage & the end of a resilient environment. We need a new relationship with truth & the emergence of thrivalism. @eshuck.bsky.social

We raise a small batch of Painted Lady butterflies each year and release them on the farm. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to learn about insect life cycles.

Peas going in. We’ve repurposed some old wire fencing to use as a trellis. We’ll also need to net for the first few weeks as we have a high population of wood pigeons here who make short work of the pea shoots.

Climate change impacts as coniferous-deciduous mixed forest becomes deciduous-coniferous forest, due to hotter, drier climate. Stumps of fallen dead spruces and pines replaced by young hornbeams and oaks. #Białowieża

Amazing KINDER RISING swim trespass today attended by hundreds - remembering the unfinished business started by the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass in 1932, & calling on Labour to make history again by passing a Right to Roam Act. Great speech too by Labour MP @philbrickellmp.bsky.social!

What follows if we imagine rivers as having lives, deaths––& even rights? I wrote this essay about water & hope; imagining rivers “otherwise”; nature’s rights; grammars of animacy; & how our fate flows with that of rivers—& always has. Just spent a glorious hour at the #Cambridge Literary Festival listening to @robcowen.bsky.social & @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social discuss Rob's new book The North Road. I do love a book that starts with a map & great to hear satellite images were part of the process. @josefaschbacher.esa.int #eochat

Just 5 years ago, this was an artificial sea of bracken fern. Now it's a self-seeded young native rainforest, already complete with bluebells, celandine, violet, and other wildflowers + ferns. Removing sheep grazing was enough for all this to happen. #Rewilding 🌏

1kg of freshly picked asparagus heading to a food truck for a lunch special. Today will be the last day of picking our early row. One more week picking on our second row and that’s it for the year. We’ve definitely made the most of this seasonal treat!

BEFORE BREXIT... EU countries, including the UK: - Easiest possible trade with 27 fellow EU members - V easy trade with EFTA countries AFTER BREXIT... EU countries: - Easiest possible trade with 26 fellow EU members - V easy trade with EFTA countries UK: - Medium/hard trade with the whole world

I so loved this as a child. It was so strange and properly alien: unexplained, unexamined, left there to worry away you. Then of course the modern films tried to erase all that was interesting about it.

In hot weather, bumblebees and other pollinators need water to survive - but many natural water sources are too deep or fast-flowing for insects. You can help by making a bee bowl! More ways to help bumblebees: bit.ly/42gH98Z #nature

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

It’s Earth Week this week, and it feels like yesterday we had a career-spanning Earth Day audience with Vangelis — a composer whose masterworks helped us see our home world in a different way, and whose music continues to reverberate in so much of what we do...

The full text of our letter to Nick Thomas-Symonds is below. Grateful to Labour colleagues from communities across the country for their support. I am very optimistic that there is a stronger UK/EU deal to be done on defence, trade and a visa based youth mobility deal.

Happy St George's Day. A reminder that half of England is owned by less than 1% of the population. Some of these aristocratic landowners have inherited land since the Norman Conquest. England needs land reform and a strong Community Right to Buy! whoownsengland.org

Today is World Book and Copyright Day. Did you know: 📚 575 000 books are published in Europe every year. 💶 Publishing is one of the largest cultural industries in Europe, with an estimated market value of over €36 billion. 🤝 The entire book value chain employs more than half a million people.

Nothing sadder than a barn in April that’s lost its Swallows. There was a big collapse in numbers around local farms several years ago, and they’ve never come back. Probably the first time in thousands of years, since the Iron Age, that English farms around here never had breeding Swallows.

The Labour Government insist they're carrying out the will of the people because of their manifesto. It's complete nonsense. People voted to get the Tories out, not because of Starmer's non-inspirational manifesto. There's only one way to prove that. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

100,000 signatures! THANK YOU! 100,000 of you have signed our petition calling for a ban on driven grouse shooting. This should result a debate on a ban in parliament! Don't stop here - every name counts. Please sign and share: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Thank you! We've done this before - but it's a thrill every time. Now we start work to ensure a proper debate.

When words fall short, symbols speak. Like the motifs Ukrainians paint on Pysanky, their traditional Easter eggs – symbols of resilience and hope, unbroken by Russian aggression. The EU supports Ukraine in the war and along its European path. For a prosperous, peaceful future.

Fewer than 500 more signatures needed to reach 100,000 & trigger a Westminster parliament debate on the future of driven grouse shooting. Plz sign and share - we might get there today! @ruthtingay.bsky.social @chrisgpackham.bsky.social @markavery.bsky.social petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

This statement from the NSF is insane. Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false. Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

Every so often in history, a deranged leader will turn against scientific inquiry. An abassid caliph did in the 9th Century, Portugal’s king Manuel chased out his finest scholars because they were Jewish, Hitler also expelled his Jewish scientists. It has invariably been a terrible idea, but…

Caught in a springtrap , right next to the pairs two unhatched eggs – this is the true story of a hen harrier attempting to breed on the infamous Leadhills Estate in Scotland . We must ban driven grouse shooting , add your name now govpetition.uk/700036
