It's raining in Antarctica โ˜” This week, BAS' Dr Ella Gilbert published research on extreme precipitation events bringing rain to West Antarctica, not just snow. What does this mean? Here's the *excellent* explainer from @drgilbz.bsky.social on her YouTube channel: ๐ŸŽฌ www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-zL...

And I'm always very appreciative of the support (biased or nay)!

A closer look at the extent of sea ice globally that just set a new all-time record minimum, which is due to unusually low sea ice conditions in both the #Arctic & #Antarctic right now. Data from nsidc.org/data/seaice_... ๐Ÿงชโš’๏ธ๐Ÿฅผโ„๏ธ

I'm grateful to scientists who give us free classes in climate/earth systems (and other!) science. Social media is at its best when we can treat it as a free university where we can choose our teachers among the best, and walk in to any class. ๐Ÿ™

only 3 days left to apply!

About rivers and rain in Antarctica (yes, you read right): โ€œWe do know that rain falling on snow darkens the surface, which can enhance melting, leading to greater ice losses. โ€ฆ

Fantastic paper out today that shows rainfall in Antarctica is an under-observed and under-appreciated risk to ice-sheet stability

Huge congrats to @drgilbz.bsky.social for producing a unique, localized study of extreme precip in West Antarctica!! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ถ This study highlights what we miss when we rely on reanalyses to assess extreme events - and the role of steep terrain in the mesoscale meteorology of the Amundsen Sea Embayment ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

โ€ผ๏ธNEW VIDEOโ€ผ๏ธ โ„๏ธAtmospheric rivers bring extreme snowfall to West Antarctica. ๐ŸŒง๏ธBut they also bring rain, even when temperatures are sub-zero. Supercool, right? ๐Ÿ˜Ž Watch it here โ–ถ๏ธ youtu.be/0-zLGu2t_e0

It's raining in Antarctica - thanks to extreme conditions brought by atmospheric rivers. We show that supercooled (sub-zero) rain falls alongside LOTS of snow over West Antarctic ice shelves. Full paper at tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...

๐Ÿ“NEW paper out today๐Ÿฅณ โ„๏ธWe look at extreme snow and rain (yes, rain!) in West Antarctica over the Thwaites and Pine Island ice shelves. In it, we show that atmospheric rivers - long, thin "rivers in the sky" that bring tons of heat & moisture - deliver huge amounts of snow... and even rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ 1/8

Really interesting new guest post by @drgilbz.bsky.social exploring how atmospheric rivers are bringing rain to the frozen slopes of the West Antarctic ice sheet:

A must listen. Another great ep from @climateadam.bsky.social Posting this from my sofa, burned out ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Dr. Ella Gilbert @drgilbz.bsky.social and @climateAdam talk about the incoming Trump administration and climate change. youtu.be/WDd6xzUbKHE?...

Could Trump's second term break the climate? @climateadam.bsky.social and @drgilbz.bsky.social discuss what might happen to the climate in the second Trump term. youtu.be/MuzZm_UcCc8?...

I'm on a national committee that bridges the ocean and atmospheric science communities to facilitate research on ocean-atmosphere interactions and their role in marine biogeochemical cycles. Our weekly meetings have been put on hold to ensure we don't violate Trump's EO on DEI. ๐Ÿ™„

So now we have it. Rachel Reeves's claim that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would boost economic growth comes from a report commissioned by .... Heathrow Airport. Instead of acting in the national interest, she's channelling corporate lobbyists. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

As someone who has crashed and burned, this is feeling extremely pertinent for me this week. Great pod hosted by @climateadam.bsky.social

Could your next job be in Antarctica? We're looking for carpenters, chefs, electricians, plumbers, plant operators and more to work at our research stations. These are jobs like no other, in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. โœ… Vacancies bas.ac.uk/vacancies ๐Ÿ’ก Job alerts ow.ly/fWsu50UJHBP

A brief chat from earlier this week w/ @tinyicybubbles.bsky.social about the science behind the LA wildfires. Amped by strong mountain winds, drought & abundance of natural 'fuel', they're set against backdrop of climate change, which raises the likelihood & severity of extremes like wildfires.

I'll be in Canada this July for a *very* long-awaited trip to see family (iykyk) - do any Canadian colleagues fancy catching up about climate sci / comms? I'm starting in Vancouver (1st week) and getting the sleeper to TO (2nd week), then home from MTL (last week). New pals and collabs welcome! :)

No, the world has not breached the 1.5C global warming target. Itโ€™s a climate target - which means itโ€™s an average that must be sustained over at least a decade. We currently sit at 1.2 C. Which is already very bad. The science is clear: every bit of warming matters, every action matters.

The LA #wildfires are being driven by a combo of human, weather & #climate factors: a perfect storm that's turbocharging the impacts of an already devastating blaze. #ClimateChange increases the size & severity of fires, meaning more people will be exposed to these terrifying extremes in future.

Around this time of the year, the peak of the melt season in #Antarctica is usually reached, but this year's spike in the total melt extent is exceptionally impressive! ๐Ÿฅต (Source: nsidc.org/ice-sheets-t...)

Here is a rare and fantastic opportunity to come and work with us if you're an outstanding Earth system scientist! (Pass it on if you know someone who might be interested.)

It's the time of year where I really hate 2024 Ella's "I'll do this in the new year" attitude.

Thanks for the share Tim. Sadly it's rarely happy stuff, but hopefully a helpful summary...

Wasn't aware that haircuts were something that one could agree or disagree with, but here we are.

Well. 2024 was a whole vibe hey? A summary of the year's major events in climate here:

โ‚ฌโ‚ฌโ‚ฌ ALERT โ‚ฌโ‚ฌโ‚ฌ for creators who talk about climate. or - even better - creators who want to, but aren't sure how yet... the European Climate Foundation is providing โ‚ฌ1,500 to power (lol) your climate content
