Getting ready to spend a day with the Project BEAR leadership team and members at Shawnee State University next week! 🐻 📚 📈

Over the moon to be back in my favorite city for #PlainTalkNOLA! My 1:30 Wednesday session is full, but there are still seats available for the repeat session at 3:10. Hope to see you there 🤓⚜️💚💛💜

It’s no easy fix when big kids struggle to read, and prevention is key. But it’s never too late to provide solid instruction. What are some obstacles and how might they be overcome? I hope to see you at #PlainTalkNOLA, brought to you by the great folks at The Center for Literacy & Learning!

🤩

Loving my next chapter! Please find me on LinkedIn or DM me here if you’d like to connect. #EduSky #EduCoach

Does your middle or high school have general education students who struggle with word reading and spelling? What percent of them need this kind of help? How are they serviced? Is it working?

Merry Christmas!

Very excited about my first trip to Mississippi! Can’t wait to present RTI Revisited: Where Are We Now? as a featured speaker tomorrow at The Mississippi Literacy Association’s Winter Conference: Literacy is Sweet! 🍭 📚 www.msresaservices.com/mla2024

Currently listening to this book:

A class-action lawsuit was filed today in Massachusetts against the publisher, Heinemann, its top authors Lucy Calkins, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, and Columbia University. www.apmreports.org/story/2024/1...

Just a few of my favourite books!! #ScienceOfReading #RightToRead #KnowBetterDoBetter

I’ve been collecting examples of how increased awareness of SOR has led to surface/incomplete understandings that get translated into sub-optimal (though well-intended) instructional practice. Do you have any examples to share?

🚨 NEW PUBLICATION ALERT 🚨 New #TosteTeam pub led by @brennanchandler.bsky.social focused on word reading skills for secondary students with LD. Included in a special issue of Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy edited by Townsend, Lupo, & colleagues. Access it here: tinyurl.com/JAALTosteTeam 1/3

Teachers who are afforded the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills in a supportive environment see student reading achievement climb and they feel better about their teaching.

It’s a good start if you recognize the Scarborough Rope when you see it. But can you sketch it from memory on a scrap of paper? Do you regularly use it to help you make decisions about instruction, materials, assessment, and data analysis?

Now that “the science of reading” and evidence-aligned instruction are (finally) a big part of the conversation in schools, how are decision-makers choosing professional learning providers to make sure educators receive correct and thorough information?

Now that your beginning of year universal screening data (preferably a CBM suite w/ a normed ORF measure) is collected, you can tell what % of students are at/above benchmark. If it is less than 80%, what’s the plan for tightening up core instruction so fewer kids need intervention services?

Reminder: RTI is not a service. Kids don’t “test into RTI” & then “get RTI” from an “RTI teacher.” If we are using the term this way, we missed the boat. RTI is an overarching approach to instruction & the most important “RTI tchr” is the gen ed tchr delivering core instruction.
