"Today, I am announcing my decision to step down as Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), effective today. It has been an honor and privilege…

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

Seriously considering this for my next birthday

Phage people - does anyone have a lambda phage with a deletion/mutation in the integrase gene (unable to lysogenize)? If so, can you please share it with us to help us test a cool hypothesis? Thanks! Please RT. 🦠🙏

There’s a chemsky joke to be made about the astrobiology news, revolving around sending the grad student 120 light-years away to run the Swern reaction where no one else can smell it

Steve Kerr: "I believe in academic freedom. I think it's crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to. And they should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say, by our government. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

In the midst of all the chaos and uncertainty, I'm very grateful to have a reason to celebrate today

Great news: NIH postbac program is recruiting again! If your grad school plans were affected by program cutbacks or admissions freezes this year I highly encourage you to apply, this could be a perfect opportunity. Please repost. www.training.nih.gov/research-tra...

Next up, Cornell and Northwestern

One BILLION dollars. As a Cornell alum, I call on them to stand strong and tell the administration to see them in court.

Interested in chemical mechanisms of membrane proteins ?We have an opening for postbac fellows. Please share and repost. Thanks ! Our research focuses on understanding the chemical and cellular mechanisms of integral membrane enzymes and transition metal transporters. bit.ly/42jWXYD. /n

UMich Biophysics has an open search for a new faculty member. Application materials are due 5/15. Search is open rank (despite the title in the link). Would love to bring more structural biology colleagues to Biophysics. #NMR careers.umich.edu/job_detail/2...

If you were hoping for industry to step in and cover the ~$48 billion gap that's opening in US biomedical research - I'm sorry. Rowan Walrath has the story: cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

Big ups to ACS for providing complimentary childcare at #ACSFall2025. Attending conferences is enough logistical work as-is. Not having worry about week-long arrangements for kiddos makes a huge difference, especially to early-career folks who are more likely to have young kids.

The final #ACSBIOL sessions of #ACSSpring2025 are tomorrow morning, Thursday the 27th: 📰 Current Topics in #Biochem and #ChemBio, Room 31A 👩‍🎓 Undergraduate and Graduate Research, Hal G/H Room 8 Be sure to check out these excellent presentations!

Absolutely. Pancreatic cancer has taken my family, friends, and colleagues, and now when we have hope for effective treatments support is being pulled?!?! The scientists working in this field are incredibly passionate about their work and they *will* get us to the finish line if we support them.

It’s an honor to receive the ACS Chem Biol Young Investigator Award! I’m most grateful for the contributions from all past & present lab members — it is an award for all of you as much as for me. This. So much this.

First time I've made soda bread, let's see how this turns out

Please RT Is anyone recruiting a B.S. level technician or M.S. student with microbiology (genetics/genomics, physiology, molecular biology) interests? An excellent undergrad in my lab, Tabitha, was just wait-listed from PhD programs due to the funding situation.

Meet Gracie Himes, age 20. Her goal: Fight cancer by developing new medicines. On March 3, her dreams were shattered when Trump admin cuts hit West Virginia University, which rescinded her PhD program offer. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

If you're in the US, considering Europe for your PhD, and you identify as a minority, I will chat with you and review any application documents you need 🧪

Hey #chemsky and beyond, with all that is going on, I am curious what expensive, high margin molecules we could provide to the community for free. What things do you use all the time, cost way too much, and would make a difference? Alexa Fluor 488 NHS? Other dyes? Other molecule?

Every single philanthropic institution needs to do this rather than retracting right now. abcnews-go-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/abcnews....

Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.

Fewer teachers signed up for Skype a Scientist this February than the last few Februarys. Could be lots of reasons for that, but ugh. Still bums me out. It's my responsibility to make sure we get people connected with science but teacher outreach is VERY hard. Once again I need to get creative.
