Elon Musk quietly deleted a post that said he would hand out two $1 million checks to people who had already voted in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Federal law prohibits payments to Americans in exchange for their registering to vote or casting ballots.

As President Trump seeks to purge the federal government of “woke” initiatives, agencies have flagged hundreds of words to limit or avoid. An analysis by The New York Times reveals how these words are being removed from government websites. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

TLDR: The 51st state talk is not a joke. It is a consistent delivery of threats to Canadian sovereignty at the highest levels of government. Our reporting out today. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/w...

Four government IT employees tell Ian Bogost and Charlie Warzel that Elon Musk's incursion into the U.S. government may be worse than anyone realizes: “This is the largest data breach and the largest IT security breach in our country’s history."

This is the worst classification scandal in 20 years. According to someone who knows: Trump has done more for China in a couple of weeks than Xi could have dreamed.

Thousands of leaked emails show that, while Demetris Ioannides served as MeritServus' director and the firm administered portions of Deloitte’s business in Cyprus, the companies collaborated intimately to support Roman Abramovich’s vast offshore network.

Five years since ICIJ’s #ChinaCables investigation, Uyghurs in exile and advocates say the ethnic minority group’s conditions haven’t improved. Read the investigation's anniversary piece:

Kash Patel, whom Donald Trump plans to nominate as F.B.I. director, "has helpfully provided us with a list of people President Biden should pardon before he leaves office," writes the columnist Michelle Goldberg. nyti.ms/3VpSAsk

In Venezuela, at least 10 journalists have been arrested since the recent electoral campaigns began, and eight remain in prison “under false charges and in worrying conditions,” according to @rsf-inter.bsky.social, which advocates for freedom of information.

The British government’s decision to sanction Isabel dos Santos and associates follows a series of criminal charges and asset freezes brought by multiple governments against the daughter of Angola’s former president after ICIJ’s #LuandaLeaks in 2020. https://buff.ly/3CZbRui

Recommended reading. A deep dive in to information laundering, multipolarity, and how autocracies seek to control the narrative. And what we can do about it. Essential reading in this new era we’re entering. @anneapplebaum.bsky.social

Solid column by Peggy Noonan, whom I usually do not recommend: “But these nominees seem as if they want a demolition derby everywhere. That isn’t a plan for progress but a recipe for unproductive chaos—nonstop, systemwide, all agencies involved.” www.wsj.com/opinion/bipa...

“There are just two major pacts governing nuclear weapons in the cosmos, both of which predate Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon,” W.J. Hennigan writes. Decades later, are they enough to protect against a new space Cold War? nyti.ms/4imfWsG

Politico is reporting that Ric Grenell offered MAGA influencers five-figure contracts to promote him on social media for Sec of State. I went back and looked and found a bunch within a 3-day window. Here are a few.

"Repeat after me: there was no 'landslide'. There was no 'blowout'. There was no 'sweeping' mandate given to Trump by the electorate. The numbers don’t lie." My new Guardian op-ed on the new GOP election lie - and why it's important to rebut it! I brought (lots of) receipts:

President Vladimir Putin of Russia and senior Kremlin officials “intentionally and directly” authorized a program of coerced fostering and adoption of Ukrainian children during the war in Ukraine, according to a new report that provides strong evidence for a war crimes case.

2,000 Mules -- a movie full of debunked and bogus claims -- is a central part of the election denialism movement. Now - two and a half years after its release - its creator Dinesh D'Souza is admitting the movie got some things wrong.... www.cnn.com/2024/12/02/p...

Reading the pardon coverage...I don't think the significance of the Gaetz/Patel/Bondi nominations has sunk in. People still aren't getting what a politicized DOJ and FBI, with the power to arrest/bug/harass anyone for any reason, would be able to do.

The lack of self-awareness is almost impressive.

Great to see #CaspianCabals @icij.org @zdfde.bsky.social @derstandard.at @spiegel.de (&many more) featured in @gijn.org‘s „Stories of the Week“ 🎊

This is just a small handful of the hundreds of pardons Trump gave to drug traffickers, violent felons, fraudsters, donors, friends, cronies, wealthy businessmen, campaign aides, and Republican politicians.

When making a MAGA cabinet, it's very important to strike a careful balance between billionaires, sex criminals, Russian assets, anti-vaxxers, and just plain unpleasant people.

Much of the money in this agreement climate negotiators reached in Baku will likely be structured as debt, even though, @zoeschlanger.bsky.social writes, that stands in the way of COP’s stated goals.

they died for nothing

ICIJ's new #CaspianCabals investigation reveals how Chevron and partners prioritized profits, enabling runaway costs and ballooning budgets worth billions as Russia deployed strong-arm tactics and steered contracts to cronies. Read the story:
