Feeling tired? Stressed? Anxious? Well, if it were a hundred years ago, doctors might recommend a malt tonic. A delightful blend of malt, hops, and additives like iron, or quinine, or, and we can't forget this one, strychnine. Naturally, I had to make one. #skystorians

THREAD: As you may know, Nick Heather passed away last month. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_He.... His funeral is later today, and I thought I would summarize some of his contributions to the addictions field. This isn’t an obituary, or an exhaustive list of career highlights (1/n)

Enjoyed presenting some scattered thoughts at the launch of Philip Howell's book 'Pub' (Bloomsbury) - a great pocket paperback exploring the components and relationships that can go into shaping this complex place. A very accessible mix of history, politics, and anecdote.

We are moving our account slowly over to this platform. Follow us for news and events on women and alcohol from the @drinkingstudies.bsky.social research cluster and beyond.

I had a conversation with a friend from the IAS (yes I have one) who was arguing that Guinness 0.0 was just a ploy to get the “Guinness” name out there. I had to explain how capitalism works, and that it’s reasonable for companies to try to access customers (the non drinkers) and advertise to them.

I have a (very small) favour to ask of all you wonderful people! I'm doing a talk at the excellent Good Chemistry Brewing taproom. It would really help to get an idea of what people think about alewives (if anything!). Help a gal out by answering these 3 Qs? 💗 🍻 forms.gle/61jKrVhQsdG2...

Very interesting. I'm not sure binge drinking is a thing of the past but I hadn't heard about zebra striping or damp drinking and I love both terms!

Today ONS have published data on alcohol-specific deaths across the UK in 2023. We already knew most of the figures, but there are a few new bits of detail in today's release. The headline is that alcohol deaths have risen to their highest level on record. Which is obviously pretty bleak.
