We just won a court order stopping DOGE and unauthorized, unelected, and unvetted individuals like Elon Musk from accessing people's private data and blocking federal funds. We will keep fighting to protect all Americans from this administration’s destruction.

This is a five-alarm fire 🔥 for US science 🧪. (We keep saying that, but it keeps being true 😭.) Trump and Musk are blocking *ALL* NIH grants ‼️ by "exploiting a loophole in the process"—stopping study sections & council meetings. Every biomedical researcher in the country should be screaming. 1/

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

I'm not sure how much more obvious or clear their strategy and tactics could be or what it will take for leaders (elected, uni presidents, etc.) to take actual action to stop this ongoing coup.

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

The Trump official currently dismantling USAID was caught in a secret meeting with a group of pro-Russian separatists in the Balkans. Those he met with are under American sanctions for trying to restart the Bosnian war in the name of Christian nationalism. 1/

A lot is happening in US science. Bluesky is the best place to stay up the rolling political crisis in America that is crushing US science. It's also a good place to learn what we all can do. We have a starter pack for this. Please send your colleagues here too. 🧪 go.bsky.app/2K6jTi5

Higher-ed data scholars and researchers! Have you downloaded all the underlying IPEDS data and if so, are you hosting it on some publicly accessible website for us to use in the event the data, oh, I dunno, disappears? Cruz wants to cancel 20 NSF grants awarded to Cornell b/c they are "woke", by which he means they study marginalized populations or include them in activities. Largest by far ($9M) is infrastructure grant to improve science ed in rural NY -- so, mostly low-income white kids whose parents voted GOP.

Just cut to the chase: is any one of them a forensic accountant??

Hearing that DOGE went into the Dept of Education today and shut down almost the entirety of the department's in-house research arm, Institute of Educational Sciences, cancelling contracts totally about $900m.

We're seeing in real time what happens when a corporate oligarchy is given free reign over govt policymaking at the federal level. Why should we let a Tax Reform Commission comprised entirely of business people and their allies drive local tax policy? www.inquirer.com/politics/phi...

PA! Contact our AG, David Sunday, demand PA join the lawsuit against the illegal block on NIH funding: 717-787-3391 While you're at it, demand PA join the coalition suing for DOGE & Musk for the administrative coup & illegal data breach.

I used this data tool to tell my state reps WHY THEY MUST FIGHT cuts to NIH & NSF: FY2023 NIH (alone) PA -- awarded $2.23 BILLION that --> directly supported 21,784 JOBS --> $5.23 BILLION economic activity ++ The cost of human lives

OH FUCK NO. I'm sending an email, but white women, this is y'all's moment to shine. I can't think of a better reason to need to a speak to a manager. Inside every white woman reading this is a Karen waiting to be called into action. Lock-in, dig deep, and be a Karen for democracy!

Thank you to everyone who stands with USAID. Share far and wide. Unfortunately we don’t have $40 million to buy up ads during the Super Bowl. Even if we did, we’d use it to support the U.S. economy while feeding kids around the globe. #StandWithUSAID #SaveForeignAid m.youtube.com/watch?v=PqUE...

Very helpful data aggregation on the financial impacts of the proposed 15% #NIH indirect rate 👇 datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/

Day one of Obama's term, the GOP was facing the same odds and declared unanimously and unambiguously that they would not help him a lick and anyone who didn't like it could eat shit. It largely worked, and they left the literal playbook for the Dems - who have instantly surrendered.

This is what local news orgs should be doing now: "In 2024, the Univ. of Alabama was in the top 1% of NIH-funded institutions. The university, Alabama’s largest public employer, has received more than $1 billion in NIH funding. NIH grants in Alabama supported 4,769 jobs" www.al.com/news/2025/02...

In case folks are interested in contacting their congresspeople about the NIH indirect cuts with some estimates of what they would mean for institutions in their state, here are some estimates based on published F&A rates and funding ... let me know if you want a particular state

How much money will Americans lose if USAID is cut? Quite a lot, it turns out. I've made shareable graphics showing the ties betwen AID agriculture funding and each state. A public Google Drive repository is here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

SCOOP: The US Treasury claimed a DOGE's Marco Elez didn’t have ‘write access,’ when he actually did. Sources tell WIRED that his ability to alter code controlling trillions in federal spending was rescinded, days after officials said it didn't exist.

New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

Dear US scientists, We've been hearing a lot of questions of the form "Why aren't universities doing anything!? They need to speak out!" We can explain. It's bad news. We're on our own. But understanding why can help us all figure out our plan. Read along in thread 1/x 🧪

New reporting shows that despite the supposed unfreezing of federal grants, many Head Start centers still can't access funds, forcing them to close and leaving kids without preschool and health services and families (esp moms) without the care they need to work for pay. www.salon.com/2025/02/06/e...
