This was a fun project, and I'm excited to see it in (digital) print!

"Whatever direction linguistics may take, I hope that more and more linguists will engage with the social issues that spring from linguistic diversity." -- William Labov (2016: 596) #linguistics #Labov #social #justice #sociolinguistics

Wore this #Labov shirt today to teach about The New York City social dialect study--then took this pic in my office on the 4th floor 😀 #sociolinguistics #legend #nwav

News about our latest publication 😀

Super excited for both the first day of classes AND the first day of #lsa2025!

Schwa is so mid. #linguistics

Standardized varieties of a language are not inherently better than other varieties.

Looking back at #NWAV52 --the great papers, the lively conversations, and that moment, 2 slides in, when I realized I'd uploaded the wrong version of my presentation. Thanks for hanging in there with me, folks! Looking forward to the next one!

Wolfram: “the best studies are those that combine quantitative study and case studies, because we don’t want to lose the people who tell us what’s going on in their lives” ❤️ #NWAV52 #linguistics

I'll be using this one in class 😀

Current and former BYU folks at #nwav52

Help! I need someone to teach me how to grade research papers faster! Also, I ate all the chocolate 😭

I don't care how lazy you think I am. I'm leaving the office after a mere 9.5 hours today.

Does the social position of the person using this voice affect how you react to it?

So much to unpack here for sociolinguists--from the recording itself and from the comments twitter.com/yashar/statu...

Just saw an email from a student asking if I meant to post the answers to the midterm exam. WHAT?? After a panicky check of files and a second read of the message, I realized that she saw "answer SHEET" and thought it was a key. She was being honest, but it will take an hour to get my ❤️ rate down

Last night I had a nightmare about high school in which I said, "I still have nightmares about high school. Why is that?" And now I'm asking, why is that?

What are your favorite studies related to teen language and identity? I'm finalizing a reading list for a capstone class, and I'm sure there is some great work that I'm missing. I'm also interested in project ideas if you've tried something you really like. (Feel free to share--my network is small)

Is there a contact list for #nwav51 participants? I need to find email addresses for a couple of presenters. (Forgot to get them from the name tags or slides. Whoops!)

Preview of the latest film in the Talking Black series at #nwav51. It will be a great resource for teaching about social justice. I wish it could use it in my classes now!

Excellent talk and recommendations! I also can't wait to read the whole paper--and share it with everyone I know 😀 #nwav51

Excited for 2 talks today about Utah English! 12:15 Huckvale & Stanley. 5:30 Eldredge & Stanley #nwav51

Our co-host @gretchenmcc.bsky.social is at #nwav51 this weekend! If you see her, feel free to ask for a Lingthusiasm sticker!

My best convo starter at #nwav51 : "Hi! I'm Lisa. I work down the hall from @joeystan.bsky.social " 😀

Right after lunch at #nwav51 : Kravchenko and Stanley, "An analysis of Ukrainians' language attitudes and ideology--a conflict catalyzed identity shift." Don't miss it! :)

Arrived in NY for #NWAV51! Wahoo!

Using this post to illustrate politeness theory in my sociolinguistics class this week 😀

Love me some xkcd
