This new research challenges these previous assumptions by defining a protective role for constitutively-expressed IFNe in the testis. It is hoped that future research aimed at understanding the regulation & activity of IFNe in the testis will lead to new treatments for Zika & male infertility! 3/3

IFNe expression in the female reproductive tract has already been well characterised by our group & others (see Fung et al 2013). However, the testis has long been believed to be an 'immune privileged' site deficient in antiviral defences, allowing it to act as a reservoir for viruses. 2/3
