Pause in training programs and freeze in fellowships for *just* months to a year = losing talented+motivated trainees in STEMM. There will be shortage of scientists who make happen breakthrus & innovations, physicians who cure diseases & save lives, and teachers who educate (or babysit sometimes).

“Research universities… can be economic engines for the (local) communities they serve” and “through education, research, and community outreach, (universities) (positively contribute to) the states’ economy” magazine.washington.edu/uw-is-a-powe...

Be kind to one another.

1/ Scientific research isn’t just knowledge generation, it’s training future physicians, therapists, healthcare providers, policy advocates, educators, data scientists, financial workers in corporate America, and more, it’s allowing us to learn from our collective humanity.

Biomedical research saves lives, reduces health burden and suffering, and promotes wellness. Multicultural research advances representation of and empowers underserved, continuously marginalized people & communities. Health literacy is good, pseudoscience and medical disinformation are dangerous.

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Research is… activism and critical reflections

Sharing on behalf of a friend and mentor in the Pasadena area. Please consider donating to help a single mom of three kids (inc one with special needs) to relocate and recover from the Eaton fires in LA. Any amount can help! gofund.me/08ddbb12

2024 took some of our giants in multicultural psychology, including Dr. Bill Cross. We are grateful for his tireless work on the advancement of ethnic minority research and the understanding of racial identity development. Rest in Power!

One more day in 2024, here’s a year-in-review for our lab! Looking to a productive and community oriented 2025!

Something that is important to our lab is amplifying voices within the Black Community to strengthen bonds and to show support. So in light of the holiday season we made a list of events and Black owned businesses in your local area that may be of interest to you.

Hey new peeps here, follow our lab to learn about our research, students and their accomplishments, and more!!

Research is… learning from and working with others who are way smarter than me. I get goosebumps, and it happens quite often 😅

it. me.

Is there a reason why all scientific journals don’t sign on to at least Level 1 on all open science efforts? Especially journals that have a lot of issues per year and publish a lot of papers, I’m 👀 at you.

📣📣📣Seeking nominations for new Editor for Psychological Bulletin! Repost! Candidates should be APA members and available to start receiving manuscripts in 2026 for issues published in 2027. (Self)Nominations thru APA's Editor Search Website: editorsearch.apa.org #science #diversity #psychology

Reframing: two papers were written, two papers were under review, and two papers have gotten feedback for revision. 🤓

Research is… data collection. No one is above grunt work.

Never been a fan of the Greys Anatomy. But here I am, bored. You know the writers aren’t true Seattleites because they say “traffic on the 5.” Excuse me. It’s called “I-5!”

In my reference of a study from 2019, I can no longer write “published within the last 5 years.” I am not okay.

My toxic trait is seeing a pretty piece of ceramic and thinking “I bet I can try to make it myself.”

Now more than ever, we need credible scientific data and clear, accessible communication of science. Transparency, cultural competence, and community-engagement are some good places to start.

🔔T-15 days! Repost & help me spread the word, all you new 🦋👩‍🔬👨‍💻 I will review applications for UW Seattle’s Adult Clinical Psychology PhD program (due Dec 1). We do diversity science & study addictive bx/mental health in communities of color. Check us out! @adapt206.bsky.social @barsstudy.bsky.social

I am that generation who still says “review the tapes” for clinical supervision. Kids these days don’t even know what cassettes are, let alone VHS 😭

👻👻 the scariest thing about halloween is that it’s practically November! Reminder that apps for @UWPsychology PhD in adult clinical program are due in ONE MONTH! I’m recruiting one (1) new student to join @ADAPT206.

Research (as a PI) is… project and personnel management.

😢 this is me and will be me forever

Lab brunch to welcome my 2 new grad students Saivone Sanchious and Christine Chang, and celebrate a successful 2-month run of my @barsstudy.bsky.social research study coordinator, Nia Jones. @adapt206.bsky.social

Everything is cultural

Analogy of pottery for academic writing: trimming at the leather hard stage is like the initial revise & resubmit. You work on the clay’s (journal review’s) timing, work as fast as you can.

#seattle really went all out with the sun today!

📃 Here’s a reading for your Friday/weekend! What elements of racial identity buffer or exacerbate the negative psychological effects of racial discrimination among people of color? Do results differ across experimental data and retrospective self report surveys? Check it out!

I did a thing (or two)! 20 years ago, I stepped foot on UW campus as a bright-eyed college freshman with an intended biol major and concept of an interest in psych. Today, I walk around this same beautiful campus as a (twice) tenured psychology professor. #GoHuskies

2/2 We approach these using diverse & innovative methods, consider psychometrics & meta-science. We value rigor, equity, transparency, & community. Consider joining us and help spread the word to prospective students! Applications due on December 1, 2024.
