Elon’s mass harassment email to all federal employees underscores the importance of having unions to represent workers against abusive management.

Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels haven't aged well. For example, Moonraker - published almost exactly 70 years ago in April 1955 - features a villain who's a super-rich industrialist and rocket-maker seeking to cause chaos because he's a secret Nazi. Such a silly idea!

And a third piece today: The NYT Style section declared this the year in which "medieval" was in. @profgabriele.com and I talk at @slate.bsky.social about what we think that means. More peasant revolt. Less King Arthur. slate.com/news-and-pol...

the US government is effectively under the control of a racist South African billionaire who was wielding a chainsaw in the air & seemingly high on drugs at a political conference, while ignoring desperate pleas from his ex-wife that he contact her because one of their children is critically ill

Another problem with AI: The more students use AI, the less they trust themselves to do the work and do it well. Which is ironic, because AI shits out trash. It's terrible for the academic self-confidence of developing minds, which is often low to begin with.

What a monumental piece of shit www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/889716...

THIS is how you communicate. Say it plain.

"Some say there's reason to be worried" absolutely pathetic headline from the ABC

“I am a king and my will is law” isn’t a clever distraction from what he’s doing, it’s the central underlying justification for everything he’s doing.

The thing that has surprised me is that so many Aussies are still travelling to the US. I'm not setting foot there until that man and his cronies are long gone

The experience of today's uni students is so far below what I experienced it shouldn't have the same name...and that's not the fault of academics, but our exec overloads who keep insisting that they know how to do our jobs better than we do www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

Years ago, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I interviewed a former fb employee, and I remember her continually emphasizing that these tech bros weren't evil geniuses, but were, in fact, dangerous because they were utterly clueless, totally reckless, and had too much power.

Our AUKUS partner praising the regime that murdered 27 Australians on flight MH17.

The United States is joining an international fascist network before our very eyes.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

New issue of RECEPTION is out, dedicated to the memory of the phenomenal Patrocinio (Patsy) Schweickart ❤️, and with papers on celebrity book clubs, Oprah, and the reception/interpretation of WandaVision on Spanish Twitter!

The JD Vance team flagged my TikToks for impersonation and had my account banned for making fun of him in a doughnut shop.

This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement. The wholesale erasure of history in real time.

I'm sure it's a coincidence that Trump rolled back air safety and now planes are crashing everywhere.

This can all be applied to the Australian higher Ed sector

In Crikey, Catri Menzies-Pike and I wrote about Creative Australia's decision to drop Khaled Sabsabi from the Venice Biennale. If conservative media is going to dictate cultural policy, Creative Australia might as well pack up and call it a day www.crikey.com.au/2025/02/17/k...

This is spot on. University staff should also be doing the same re universities seeking to replace staff with AI "writing advice" or research programs.

Good time to cancel your subscription.

Clearly haven't done their reading re Da Vinci's sexuality...

If the ABC is going to give softball interviews to "former Home Affairs secretary" Mike Pezzullo, they should really disclose to readers that he was sacked from that job for 14 breaches of the Code of Conduct

Presumably any book written by a minority or a woman is banned.

Dear students, please do not use the "AI writing advice" tool that your university is currently plugging. It will not provide any useful advice.

Two coders have already infiltrated the DOGE website and left their own messages on it at the time of 404’s reporting on Thursday evening: “THis is a joke of a .gov site,” said one, and “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN -roro” said another.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

My first year back at the Historical Fictions Research Conference. A great team. Papers inc narratives constructed by a costume museum, sites chose for historical tv, nostalgia in Turkish historical films and Sephardi identity in two tv series were fascinating. historicalfictionsresearch.org
