I've created a 'Medieval Historians of UK & Europe' starter pack of historians, researchers, and institutions. If anyone suited would like to be included, please let me know. #medieval #historian #history #uk #britain #europe #medievalist go.bsky.app/FCtPe35

Stone #fishweirs are part of the #maritime #culturallandscapeof #FrenchPolynesia. Archaeology analyses show large pelagic fish, Scombridae and Carangidae, sea turtles and sea mammals were part of the diet in prehistory. #coastalhistory #maritimeheritage 1/4

Both of these gilded silver cups were used as containers for Viking Age hoards. The one from Balmaghie (left) was made in the area of modern day Iran and the Harrogate cup (right) is from Continental Europe. Their beautiful designs & utility were appreciated #medievalsky #museum #silkroads #vikings

Cornwall was especially renowned for pictorial bellringers boards This onw is from Fowey (pronounced Foy).

Umberto Eco put together a now-famous list of 14 attributes of fascistic states. I'm going to discuss each of them in hopes this helps ppl understand that fascism is not just a buzzword. We're going to go through these by theme, so strap in. 🧵

Shout out to the Roman officers' wives Claudia Severa and Sulpicia Lepidina whose correspondence at Hadrian's Wall sparked my interest and led to my book. #RomanFortThursday romaninscriptionsofbritain.org/inscriptions...

Really excited that my book 'Roman military households' is now published! Available from BAR Publishing (below) or from all good archaeology libraries.

Kind of appropriate that it came out on #RomanFortThursday - my book 'Military Households of Roman Auxiliary Commanders in Western Europe and North Africa' is now published! www.barpublishing.com/military-hou...

Feeling quite downcast. Don’t we care enough even to make time for this important gesture of solidarity whilst Trump sells Ukrainians down the river. If the shoe was on the other foot & Putin had invaded the UK what would you want other countries to do?

Oh. My. Goodness. This is TRULY stunning! A Bronze Age goldworker's hoard.... and will you *look* at that anvil!!! 😍 finds.org.uk/database/art... (P.S. Well done to the detectorist who stopped immediately, called the specialists, which meant the whole hoard was lifted in a block) #Archaeology

1. Quick 🧵 on the change to policy that, on the face of it, bans refugees from ever acquiring British citizenship. @sonial77.bsky.social has published a short article on Free Movement: freemovement.org.uk/good-charact... And I've done a follow up on my Substack: open.substack.com/pub/wewanted...

New sharp and inspiring study out from @drsueoosthuizen.bsky.social on #collective governance and #landscapes.

How do ancient #traditions of #collective governance help societies weather unpredictable change? 🎺Just published! 🎺 'Panarchy & #commons across the longue durée’ Open access via heathland.place/panarchy-and.... 📷 Minchinhampton Common (c) Geoff March, Stroud Times, 12.5.2023

Cuts to the Arts and Humanities have been going on for years in the UK. Several great departments were closed down. But in most places, the erosion was more gradual. /1

This is ghoulish from Labour. Using people's suffering to try and appease Reform, which is something no-one will ever go far enough for. Labour has the potential to actually be doing something to reduce hostility. Instead they are stoking anti-migrant attitudes just like the Conservatives did.

Another corker of an article has appeared in Early Medieval England and its Neighbours: Rebecca Thomas on 'The Naming of the Welsh in the Early Middle Ages'. Open Access too! www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

The final program for our #ERC_ANTHEA conference 'A Place for the Heathlands?' is now out on events.au.dk/heathland/pr... with keynote speakers Kenneth Olwig, Kari Hjelle and Doyle McKey. Still a few days to sign up. @au.dk @cc.au.dk

The AI Opportunities Action Plan (Matt Clifford report), trailed in today’s morning news is now out in full. I’ve read it, and here’s a few observations 1/10 Link to full report assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6784eb...

The bronze Corinthian helmet found two centuries ago at the Baux-de-Provence, probably in a funerary context, constitutes a unique discovery in the Provence area. Its typology allows one to date it from the sixth century B.C. : books.openedition.org/pccj/3901

How to do with books, and paper, in #earlymodern Europe? This is a 🧵 for #paperhistory and #bookhistory experts and #skystorians in general. The thread is about storing objects in a paper consuming culture. So follow me and this thread to investigate what do we see here in this printed image?

Absolutely love this work! With my participation hat on: so much conservation work arouses ire because it's not well explained. Telling people what you're doing & why = a chance to engage new publics with nature. (Some might just become future volunteers) www.theguardian.com/environment/...

“Unfortunately, the latest data out today makes it clear that we are in a flu wave close to the very large wave of 2022/23, and it hasn’t peaked yet.”

The article 👇 incl. drone footage of 200 large dinosaur footprints walking across Oxfordshire, making trackways up to 150m long. They're from 2 types of dinosaur: (herbivorous) cetiosaurus & (carnivorous) megalosaurus. And the excavation's still incomplete... www.theguardian.com/science/2025...
