The chief arguments for open-sourcing dangerous tech are: 1) we can learn how it ticks (not true for "open-source" LLMs, for which we only know the weights not the training) or 2) tech is neutral so moral onus is on the user (sorry but handing out bandaids is different from handing out bayonets)

How can we oppose AI governance when it fails to help those who stand to lose the most from the technology’s deployment? Blair Attard-Frost, Ana Brandusescu, David Gray Widder, and Christelle Tessono point to lessons learned from Canada’s failure to pass national AI legislation.

"The role of academic publishing was once to distribute knowledge from research to the public at large. Now the customer is the academic, paying the publisher direct for required performance measures." #academia #edusky #philsky #mediaecology

I was just thinking. Remember the tingly static fuzz you could feel on an old TV screen? What was that🤔? #tooclosetothetv What’s a childhood sensory memory that’s totally gone now for you? #90sKids #Nostalgia #ChildhoodMemories #OldTech #VintageFeels #RememberWhen #MillennialMemories

Exciting news! I’ll be giving my first keynote: "From Orality to AI: Literacy, Learning, and the Classroom in a Digital Age." Also-The other keynote is Marshall McLuhan’s grandson. Link in comments. #AI #Edusky #MediaEcology #philsky

I have really cool students. An international student brought me this today - just to let me try it and teach me about home and his family. Super cool! #edusky #teachlife

This time, we are taking it to Zoom to include those who may not be able to make it to campus! Registration link: register.outreach.psu.edu/search/publi...

@techpolicypress.bsky.social has posted a lovely interview with Nicholas Carr, the author of our NEXT book club on March 13. You can register for that one here: oklahoma.zoom.us/meeting/regi... www.techpolicy.press/how-technolo...

Great points. All AI filters our experience. Sometimes that curation is what we need. Sometimes, though, well, our kids grow up swimming in the Gulf of America. #philsky #techethics #aiethics #mediaecology

NGL, I have been more and more uncertain. #edusky #funny #academia #reviewer2 #philsky

My son asked me to prompt DeepSeek with some specific prompts. It refused to acknowledge Taiwan as its own country and wouldn't discuss Tiananmen Square. #ai #aiethics #techethics #philsky #mediaecology

Sharing the podcast project that I did with two colleagues and fellow Ong scholars during COVID. I miss our conversations. They were grounding during such a lonely time. #mediaecology #philsky #philtech

I asked ChatGPT to generate an image of me based on what it "knows" about me. Ugh! How close is yours? #bias #ai #techethics #philtech #edusky #mediaecology #philsky

As knowledge expands, specialization must deepen—WalterOng saw this coming. But with the explosion of academic literature, how do we keep up without AI? Ignoring it risks losing ideas, not just missing papers. Maybe this is the natural next stage of noetic evolution. #MediaEcology #AI #philsky

Started tightening a project I've been lagging on for a while for this. Super excited. Also, #Metallica is in Philly on the 23rd. Does it get any better?! #philly #edusky #philsky #AIinED #futureofwork #Wharton

We got so many open calls at the moment. Today, I'm sharing a call for contributions to a collectively written article on GenAI... Check out details, if that's your thing! link.springer.com/journal/4243...

On February 26th, we will be presenting our latest research on AI and perceptions with a lens this time on equity. This research is slotted for publication soon, so stay tuned. #AIinED #techethics #philsky #edusky #educationalequity

My latest for @techpolicypress.bsky.social, “Anatomy of an AI Coup.” With the takeover of the US government by tech elites underway, we must examine its goals and next steps — and how we will know if it has succeeded. www.techpolicy.press/anatomy-of-a...

Wow, wow, wow. These kids were amazing. From sentience to ethics, they were the most curious audience I have ever had. Great group! #AIED #EDUSKY #EACADEMY #K12EDUCATION

I've been reading to prepare for this book club, and the Propagandist's Playbook is answering so many questions about how we got to where we are right now. Join us! #techethics #philsky #edusky #mediaecology #disinformation #infowars

The Institute of General Semantics has published the Symposium talks from the fall in New York. I am posting mine here, but there are plenty of others that are great on the IGS Youtube Channel. #AIinED #mediaecology #generalsemantics #philsky #philtech

I'm teaching and Media and Public Humanities class this semester and everyday I begrudgingly check to see if anything else has been altered that will affect lesson plans. It's just so discouraging! Rescinding this order was absurd. #academicfreedom #edusky #publichumanities

These are like my version of 5k medals. #edusky #philsky #academia

ISO an instructor at a non-US college or university to build a course relationship/project with (COIL project). Hoping this project would be related to technology/culture, including AI.
