I was in the Army on the 200th anniversary. It was about 90 days after Saigon fell. We demonstrated hunter-killer teams and combat assaults-about 15 pilots. A battalion of infantry marched in review. Families were proud, not one soldier was happy. Wanna celebrate? Give soldiers a few days off.

Kent State keeps coming up in conversations about LA. Most people overlook the quality of today's Guard soldiers and their training. Many Guard soldiers in the 60s and 70s joined to avoid the draft. Training was often beer drinking in the motor pool. Soldiers and leaders are more professional today.
